The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is responsible for ensuring safety of the Nation's passenger and freight rail operations and infrastructure by promoting safe, efficient and accessible rail transportation. The mission and focus of FRA has grown to include the design and management of an unprecedented investment in the creation of a nationwide passenger rail network. FRA is providing leadership for the creation of a more balanced transportation system, transforming the way Americans travel.
This position is located in the Office of Railroad Safety, Office of Safety Assurance and Compliance, Signal and Train Control Division, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). You will serve as the Staff Director (Signal and Train Control) for the FRA’s headquarters office. In this capacity, you will plan, develop, coordinate, implement, administer, and direct safety programs within headquarters and the Positive Train Control (PTC) staff, and the regions in support of FRA objectives, plans, and missions.
You will oversee the PTC staff component that provides specialized technical support related to PTC implementation and use across the United States rail industry. As Staff Director, through a PTC Chief, you will direct the PTC staff in analyzing and overseeing the proper and safe development, testing, and implementation of PTC, as well as provide direction and guidance in monitoring the use of these systems.
An ideal candidate for this position is a senior-level professional with strong analytical skills and proficiency with identifying trends that can improve railroad safety. The candidate should have experience in leading programs involving the Signal & Train Control (S&TC) discipline within the railroad environment. Additional experience is desired in the field of processor-based/communications-based train control safety engineering. A background in all phases of processor-based/communications-based train control product development, testing, and implementation is desired. Good communication skills are necessary.
