    MAJOR DUTIES: As a member of the Hotshot Crew, you will:

    • Suppress the full range of wildland fires
    • Performs assignments such as fire line construction, use of pumps and engines, hose lays using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustments.
    • Chops brush, fells small trees and moves dirt to construct fire line
    • Use various hand tools such as axes, shovels, Pulaski, McLeod, power tools including chainsaws and portable pumps. 
    • Cleans, reconditions and stores fire tools and equipment.
    • May perform project work such as fuel inventory, preparing reports, and hazard fuel reduction projects.
    • May perform project work such as road and trail maintenance, habitat manipulation, and miscellaneous equipment and facilities maintenance.

    SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS:  To be rated eligible for this position you must meet the selective factor (if any) in addition to qualifying specialized experience and/or education described in the Occupational/Assessment Questionnaire by the closing date of this announcement Monday, February 18, 2013.  Candidates are required to meet OPM Group Coverage Qualification Standards for Technical and Medical Support Positions and Individual Occupational Requirements for the Forestry Technician Series, GS-462 It is available for review on OPM's website at http://www.opm.gov/qualifications.

    GS-03:  Requires 6 months general experience OR 1 year above high school with courses related to the occupation. Two seasons of experience also will qualify you at the GS-3 grade level.

    GENERAL EXPERIENCE:  (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.

    SEASONAL EXPERIENCE:  A season of experience is considered to be a period of no less than 3 months of continuous employment on a seasonal basis.  Shorter periods may be combined to make a season, provided a total of at least 3 months experience is shown.  For any period where the work exceeded 3 months, the excess work is credited towards an additional season of experience. Two (2) seasons of experience qualify for GS-3.

    Examples of qualifying experience include:

    • Forestry aid or technician experience
    • Engineering, range or soil conservation technician experience that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on non-forest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment
    • Farming or ranching experience that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment and that provided a basic understanding of land use
    • Experience in forest or range fire control, prevention or suppression.


    SUITABILITY, CLEARANCE & REQUIREMENTS: A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant’s successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighting over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is primarily performed in forest and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with thick tangled vegetation, smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material.

    TELEWORK INDICATOR: The Bureau of Indian Affairs has determined that the duties of this posiiton are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

    HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

    • Knowledge of standard wildland fire management program requirements, suppression tactics, methods and procedures.
    • Skill in the use of wildland firefighting handtools, pumps and hoses, and chainsaws sufficient to perform routinely assigned fire suppression.
    • Knowledge of fire behavior, hazards and accepted safety practices and procedures.
    • Knowledge of reporting requirements and procedures.
