This position employs knowledge of the organization and the functions of the branches served in conducting a range of mail, file and clerical support functions.   

Being a Coast Guard (CG) Civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team.  Typical work assignment include:

*  Receiving, opening, sorting and distributing both incoming and outgoing mail.

*  Reviewing and processing outgoing mail.  Maintaining appropriate records and logs for tracking and reconciliation purposes.

*  Examining file materials to identify primary subject matter and assign proper classification.

*  Reviewing filed material in the light of ongoing programs or special projects and determines if such material should be consolidated, be re-classified, or be retired, etc.

*  Performing various clerical duties such as maintaining records for the vessel/facility inspection branches as well as assisting the investigation branch with all correspondence material.

*  Drafting initial letters to assist prevention staff.

*  Receiving walk-in visitors, answering and directing incoming telephones calls and handle requests for information.

Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 (in the Federal sector). Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include: work that involves preparing and mailing correspondence, conducting research, maintaining records, and utilizing a personal computer;

sorting and routing mail to the proper recipient; sorting and preparing outgoing mail into proper categories; establishing and maintaining file labels; filing a variety of documents; utilizing an automated system to add, delete, and conduct searches on records; locating and retrieving records.

OR

Have completed 4 years of progressively higher-level education in an accredited business or technical school, college or university above high school in any field for which high school graduation or equivalent is a prerequisite.

OR 

Combination of specialized Experience and education. For an example, education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

4.  Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and USCG required document and correspondence formats sufficient to review, correct and type materials in draft form.

1.     Best Qualified: Applicants possessing a background that demonstrates a superior level of all evaluation criteria.
2.    Well Qualified: Applicants possessing a background that demonstrates a satisfactory level of the evaluation criteria.
