We are looking for dedicated interns to participate in CMS' 12-week Summer Internship Program to assist in improving health care and ensuring coverage for all Americans while gaining experience in social science career fields (e.g. health care administration, public health, health policy, etc.).

In this position you will serve as a Student Trainee in the CMS Pathways – Positions within the Health Insurance Student Trainee, GS-0199, series will be assigned within Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to assist professional and technical staff by performing a variety of health insurance related duties in support of component objectives.  Typical work assignments may include:

 

  • Assisting senior Health Insurance Specialist conduct studies to evaluate health care policy;
  • Assisting in researching legislation’s impact on health insurance;
  • Working in a team setting to assist with development and evaluation of Medicare and Medicaid programs.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: 
To be eligible for the Pathways Internship Program, an individual must have been accepted for enrollment or be enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution/program on a full or half-time basis for the upcoming FALL 2013 semesterClick here for a definition of a qualifying education institution/program.

- AND - Possess and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on the 4.0 scale.

 

Transcripts or other applicable documents (e.g. acceptance letter) are required to verify program eligibility. 

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT:

GS-04: Successful completion of education 2 years above high school (This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.);

- OR - 1 year of general experience which is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.  Examples of general experience may include answering telephones; typing; scanning; filing; copying; or greeting customers;

- OR - Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements at the grade GS-04.

 

GS-05: Successful completion of education 4 years above high school (This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.);

- OR - 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04; examples of specialized experience include: researching background material; gathering pertinent data, planning and organizing work; communicating orally; or communicating in writing;

- OR - Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements at grades GS-05 and below; for the GS-05 level, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

 

GS-07: Successful completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education (One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended;

- OR - Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) upon completion of a bachelor’s degree. Click here for more information about SAA;

- OR - 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05; examples of specialized experience include: researching background information; providing telephone customer services; or assisting with researching and gathering data to summarize information;

- OR - Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the GS-07.

 

GS-09: Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree;

- OR - Successful completion of 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree (One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.);

- OR - LL.B. or J.D., if related;

- OR - 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07; examples of specialized experience include: assisting with researching, gathering and summarizing data and information from a variety of sources; assisting with conducting studies and making recommendations for solutions; or reviewing data for accuracy and making recommendations for problems identified;

- OR - Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the GS-09. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for positions at grades GS-09.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT:
