Performs simple and routine maintenance of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities. Assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work. Performs the following: minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools, minor painting using brushes and rollers, minor plumbing such as tightening and replacing fittings and washers, using a plunger as necessary. Mows grass, and maintains trees and shrubs. Performs routine maintenance around campground sites and trails, collects trash, cleans and services chemical toilets, restrooms and other facilities. Operates light truck to pick up supplies or to transport materials to and from work sites.

Area Information:

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Superior between the communities of Munising (population 2,500) and Grand Marais. The duty stations for these positions are at Munising and Grand Marais. Government housing may be available for rent. Amenities in Munising include basic shopping, medical facilities, and K-12 schools. Grand Marais has a population of less than 500 people and shopping is limited. K-12 schools are available in Grand Marais. Basic shopping and medical facilities for those at Grand Marais are available 60 miles away in Munising. Summers are generally warm and pleasant. The winter season may extend from October to May and is often characterized by cold temperatures and seasonal snowfall in excess of 140 inches. The area is rich in outdoor sporting activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, biking, camping, and skiing.

About the Pathways Program:

The Internship Program is for Current students only.   The Internship Program provides students in high schools, colleges, trade schools and other qualifying educational institutions with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while completing their education.

If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Agreement which specifies the conditions of your employment as we’ve indicated in this job announcement.  You will also be required to maintain your student status of attending an accredited educational institution at least half-time, seeking a degree or certificate, and being in good standing.  You will be required to provide student documentation every semester to your supervisor to demonstrate your status.

While this position is not established with the intention to convert the selected intern into a permanent position, if you meet all the requirements for conversion, you may be considered for conversion at this park or other federal locations if positions are available.  In general, Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program. This is not a guarantee, but merely an eligibility for conversion without further competition. To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:
* Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program
* Complete their degree or certificate requirements
* Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
* Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and
* Perform their job successfully.

Conditions of Employment:

You will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.

You must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of your appointment.  To verify that you do, we will require proof of your continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout your internship.  Failure to do so will result in termination of your internship and employment with us. 

Incidental vehicle operator: You may be required to operate a government (or private) vehicle as part of your official duties.  Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter, you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.  You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation and again every year thereafter.

You will be required to wear the NPS uniform in accordance with NPS and park policies.

New employees of the Department of the Interior must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of net pay within 30 days of entrance on duty.
