This Emergency Department (ED) Physician Assistant will be an integral part of the team caring for patients in the ED.  She/he will work directly for the Chief of the ED Service Line with specific duties and responsibilities of the position at the discretion of the Chief.  Additional clinical oversight will be provided by licensed physicians staffing the VA ED at all times.  The Physician Assistant will be fully qualified and certified to function in both clinical and assigned administrative roles in accordance with the guidelines and policies of the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:


·         The primary focus of clinical practice is to provide emergency care to Veterans who present to the ED.

·         The PA should expect to be involved with all aspects of the clinical care of all types of ED patients. The Physician Assistant has the authority to order all tests and procedures necessary to evaluate and care for these patients. These evaluations and orders will fall within the guidelines of the North Carolina Medical Board as well as the bylaws of the Durham VAMC.

·         The PA will be expected to practice independently when caring for lower acuity patients in an ED “Fast Track” setting.

·         The PA will be expected to become familiar with and cooperate with multiple VA and community resources that provide ongoing care to Veterans. 

·         The PA is expected to assist other Physician Assistants assigned to the service as needed.

·         Other clinical duties as assigned by the Chief of the ED.


·         Attends committee meetings and process action teams to represent the ED Service Line at the discretion of the Chief of the ED.

·         Is actively involved with ongoing ED quality improvement efforts.

·         Is committed to lifelong learning and practice improvement.

·         Participates in other administrative duties as assigned by the Chief of ED.

·         Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States. 

·         Certification.  As of  March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment.  This requirement does not apply to non-certified PAs on VA rolls as of that date.

·         Physical Standards.  See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

·         English Language Proficiency.  PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

·         Basic Life Support (BLS) Training is preferred.   All members of the Medical Staff are required to show proof of current BLS training at the time of credentialing and privileging.



·         Two years experience in an Emergency Department

·         Demonstrated evidence of leadership potential with an emphasis on skills in interpersonal relationships, program development, critical thinking, and problem solving

·         Documented evidence of successful professional practice with progressively complex positions/assignments

·         Demonstrated ability to use computer systems in support of patient care delivery

·         Demonstrated excellence in written/verbal communication, time management and working with an   interdisciplinary team

·         Prior VA experience



(1)  A bachelor’s degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or


(2)  Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor’s degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or


(3)  Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician.  The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.
