The Veterans Affairs Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS) has a vacancy for an RN, Nurse Manager for Dialysis Unit. The Nurse Manager for the Dialysis Unit is accountable administratively and clinically for nursing practice to the Associate Director for the Patient Care/Nurse Executive through Deputy Chief Nurse/Inpatient.

The incumbent is assigned to the Dialysis section Office of Nursing Service. The Nurse Manager nursing practice involves twenty-four hour accountability for prudent resource management in the delivery of safe patient care by all VA staff in her/his assigned area/program, including VA Nursing personnel, VA contract, students, and VA per diem staff. The Nurse Manager demonstrates advanced leadership skill in developing, implementing and evaluating holistic and quality patient care delivery processes for a group of patients through the utilization of the nursing process. The Nurse Manager designs and employs various processes to facilitate the development and implementation of strategic goals and plans aimed at meeting patient care needs and performance measures. The Nurse Manager plans, organizes, staffs, and controls the work of VA personnel assigned to the patient care area. This includes routine analysis of workload measures and evaluation of their efficacy in the form of recommendation for resource allocation and deployment.

 The incumbent will assess and provide treatment to Dialysis patients. Duties include but are not limited to:

·         Plans, directs, and coordinates activities for a dialysis unit

·         Cares for outpatient chronic dialysis patients and inpatient acute dialysis patients.

·         Supervises and provides leadership and clinical support and expertise to staff and patients

·         Collaborates and works closely with other Nurse Managers to assure that the same levels of service and practice are delivered consistently. 

·         The Nurse Manager executes a position responsibility that demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care.

·         Utilizes excellent interpersonal relationship skills in interpreting and communicating Medical Center and Nursing Service mission and vision.

·         VISN policies and procedures, and VHA initiatives to staff, patients and the health care team appropriately and timely manner.

·         Initiates and leads multidisciplinary projects Sets standards for professional practice and evaluates staff ability to meet these expectations.

·         Implements and maintains a systematic process for unit-specific competency review and continually evaluates the currency and applicable to the competency review program.

·         Promotes a team approach to patient care in the Dialysis Unit Develops staff for leadership activities and mentors them to promote achievement.

·         Directly supervises others in the performance of care considering the developmental stages, cultural, economic and social differences among patients/families in the area of assignment.

·         Ensures compliance with applicable clinical practice guidelines within the scopes of each member of the nursing staff in his/her areas.

·      This Registered Nurse (RN) is a graduate of a National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited school of nursing and meets Veterans Affairs (VA) professional and physical requirements as set forth in Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Handbook 5005, and VA Directive 5102.1 dated March 27, 2009.

·     Current, unrestricted nursing license from any of the 50 states, or territory or commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia.

·     2-5 Years current Nursing experience in Hemodialysis

·     Current AHA BLS certificate

·     Master’s degree in nursing (MSN) or related field


Salary Determination:

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.

·         Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing:

o    Practice,

o    Professional Development,

o    Collaboration and

o    Scientific Inquiry.

Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research. 

Education/Experience Requirements: 

·         Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.

·         Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.

·         Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

·         Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

·         Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
