What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed _13_ months/years with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.

As a Customer Service Clerk within the Office of Information Technical Services, some of your specific duties will include:

-Serves walk-in, telephone, fax, and email customers desiring earth science products offered by USGS. 

-Maintains log of all checks received, and ensures that they are handled in a manner that meets the Federal Government’s security rules and regulations.

-Assists customers in the use of the Map Locater and Downloader. Places orders via SAP, which maintains the availability of requested products.  

-Assists with the testing of new and updated business software solution applications (SAP) and program changes.

-Performs Order Completion tasks: pull orders, process and package orders, utilize computerized mail metering equipment, quality assurance checks.

How do I qualify for this position? Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-05 level: Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-5 level: One year of specialized experience in or directly related to this position that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, the required specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service. Example of GS-4 level work: Performs a full range of assignments consisting of related steps, processes or methods related to the input of data into an ordering system and receiving, pulling and checking orders in a customer service environment. At this level, the work will require responses to differ in nature and sequence and requires knowledge of an organization's programs and operations, rules and processes. At this level, he/she exercises initiative in completing recurring assignments; uses judgment in selecting appropriate guidelines and procedures from among a number of specific references. **OR a full four years of progressive, successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is a prerequisite may be used to meet the qualification requirements for GS-5. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. **OR equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience may be used to meet the qualification requirements for GS-5. Only progressive education in excess of the first 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours (i.e., beyond the first two years) of a course of study is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
