If selected for this position, you will manage two of the Department’s most prestigious research programs: 

-The Fuels from Sunlight Energy Innovation Hub ( ) and a portfolio of Energy Frontier Research Center( ).  

-You will conceive, justify, plan, initiate, manage, and coordinate the solar energy and related research conducted in the Fuels from Sunlight Hub and a group of 10-12 EFRCs. 

The EFRCs in this portfolio perform basic research to accelerate technological breakthroughs in the conversion of solar energy to electricity and fuels. 

The Fuels from Sunlight Hub seeks to develop a viable system for the direct conversion of sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into chemical fuels, e.g., artificial photosynthesis. 

If selected for this position you would also oversee the coordination of the Hub and the EFRCs with the Solar Photochemistry program, which also supports single investigator and small-group research on solar energy conversion.

You must demonstrate experience in the following:

(1) Professional knowledge of the Chemical Sciences relevant to Solar Energy Conversion;

(2) Ability to plan, direct, and evaluate new and highly complex basic research programs, projects, and policies;

(3) Ability to plan, budget, justify, and allocate funds among a variety of competing programs and requirements; 

(4) Ability to effectively communicate in writing to prepare analytical documents and/or research findings;

(5) Ability to effectively communicate orally to serve as a spokesperson for the organization in the broad scientific areas of responsibility.

You must have a degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.


A combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT FOR THIS VACANCY: A preliminary background check must be initiated before you can begin work with the U.S. Department of Energy. Current Federal employees or other individuals with an existing completed background investigation may not be required to undergo another background check; these will be handled on a case-by-case basis in coordination with the Security Office. Failure to receive a favorable background investigation will result in termination from employment. This position is subject to drug testing. 3) Qualified - Meets the minimum qualification requirements.

The Category Rating Process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within appropriate category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Highly Qualified) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless approval has been granted.
