The New York Campus of the VA New Harbor Healthcare System has immediate opportunities available in this state-of–the art facility. We are seeking Physician Assistants to join our Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) Team. Physician Assistants are certified health care professionals who performs patient care services on patients in the SICU under the supervision of the Director of the SICU.  The ideal candidate is patient focused, detail oriented and dedicated. Expected responsibilities will include performing history and physical examinations, performing and assisting in a variety of procedures including central and arterial line placement, thoraco/paracentesis, intubation, as well as other necessary procedures for diagnostic and therapeutic management of critically ill patients. He/she will order indicated laboratory, imaging and other diagnostic studies, initiate consultations and coordinate services. Night shifts will get priority in hiring however day shifts are also available.  Per-Diem positions are also available for the right individuals. You must be a graduate of an accredited PA training program and have an active license in any state. We offer an attractive salary and benefits package.   Candidates may also be eligible to participate in the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), which assists with the reduction of outstanding student loan(s).

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
  • Education or Training. The candidate must meet one of the following:

1.  A bachelor's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or

2.  Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or

3.  Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.

  • Certification. As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified PAs on VA rolls as of that date.
  • Physical Standards. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019, http://vaww1.va.gov/ohrm/HRLibrary/Dir-Policy.htm
  • English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
  • Restriction. Under no circumstances may this occupation be used to employ physicians or other health care providers who do not meet the applicable qualification standards for their occupation. All physician assistants must meet the requirements in subparagraphs a through the above.
