Basic Educational Qualification Requirements (all grades): You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for all positions at the GS-5 grade level and above. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education.
Bachelor's Degree: biological science that included at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
Combination of education and experience -- equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the basic requirements, the following additional education and/or experience are qualifying. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the specialized experience requirements. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Minimum Qualifications for the GS-11 grade level:
A. Possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience are: Provided input in the wildlife management program by gathering, compiling, and analyzing data to determine environmental conditions, characteristics, and values, and the interrelationship of wildlife resources with other resources; analyzed data and recommended solutions to problems involving a limited section of wildlife resources issues, e.g., interpreted the effect and impact of changes on wildlife habitat as a result of specific resource activities; and/or provided input in the preparation, maintenance, and revision of functional wildlife plans that involved interpretation of data obtained from studies and field surveys.
B. A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. in wildlife biology or a directly related field.
C. An equivalent combination of professional experience and graduate level education beyond the second year leading to Master’s degree in wildlife management or wildlife biology which together equals 100% of the requirements.
GS-09: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level OR 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or master’s or equivalent graduate degree. Examples of specialized experience includes, but is not limited to include intergrating natural resource analysis, information development, and fact-finding in a natural resource program area; coordinating and planning activities coverage a broad multiple resource program; solving problems with novel, undeveloped, or controversial aspects of wildlife biology resource management; handle complicated budget, public administration, litigation, tribal government, tribal contracting and other processes work under pressure and meet short deadlines. (Your resume must support this experience.)
A. One year of professional experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience: conduct wildlife surveys; gather and record biological data regarding development impacts on wildlife and their habitat; prepare routine wildlife-related reports and plans.
B. One year of graduate education in wildlife biology or a directly related field.
C. Graduated with a bachelor's degree which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work AND I have documented Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) during my undergraduate studies. I meet the SAA by one of the following three methods: (1) class standing - upper third of the graduating class based on completed courses in the college, university or major subdivision; (2) grade point average - 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on my official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B " or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR (3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society (note: membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision). Submit a copy of your transcript and proof of GPA computation, Class standing, or Honor Society membership.
D. An equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above.
HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
Upon receipt of your complete application package, a review of your application will be made to ensure you meet the basic qualification requirements. Your rating will be based on your responses to the Job Specific Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume. If you meet the qualification requirements, your application will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Highly Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. In addition, interviews may be conducted for this position. The interviews may be conducted on a pass/fail basis or may be scored. The job specific questions relate to the following knowledge, skills and abilities required to do the work of this position.
For the GS7:
Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

General knowledge of other professional programs to provide resource management coordination and information to other resource specialists.

Ability to apply knowledge of theories, principals, and concepts related to wildlife biology.
