The Nursing Program Practice Director is responsible for the overall administrative and clinical coordination, planning, organization and operation of nursing programs in the Primary Care Service Line.  

 

Each of the four service lines: Mental Health, Primary Care, Extended Care and Surgical Care have a Nursing Program Practice Director (NPPD) who oversees the service's nursing components.  The four NPPD report directly to the Nursing Professional Community over seen by the Associate Nurse Executive and the Nurse Executive

 

The VA Central Iowa Health Care System provides a full continuum of care between the Des Moines campus and our Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC’s) and is one of the Medical Centers that make up the VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23).

The Nursing Program Practice Director is responsible for the overall administrative and clinical coordination, planning, organization and operation of Nursing programs in the Primary Care and Specialty Medicine Service Line.  These programs encompass a patient-centered continuum of care including acute care and outpatient care.    

The incumbent provides a framework for strategic planning, budgeting, management of human resources, directing, coordinating and supplying a continuum of services that are responsive to the patient, family, VHA and community needs in order to improve patient care.  She/he is considered an expert in acute care and outpatient issues, and demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate care and education appropriate to the age of veteran served.  The incumbent is a key point of contact for the medical center, VISN 23 and Central Office for Primary Care and Specialty Medicine Service Line planning and development. 

The Nursing Program Practice Director is accountable to the Primary Care Service Line, and is responsible for the breadth of patient care, nursing personnel and resource management within Nursing in Primary Care and Specialty Medicine.  The incumbent is responsible for contribution to and participation in the organization, administration and establishment of policies, procedures and practices in accordance with the stated philosophy and objectives of the Service Line.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: U.S. Citizenship; current, full, active and unrestricted RN license; BSN and a Masters Degree in Nursing or related field; and 4-5 years of clinical nursing and progressive nursing management experience.  The incumbent must have demonstrated sustained leadership, characterized by exemplary organizational and interpersonal communications.

 

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). 

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.   

 

 Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

 

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.   Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.
