A vacancy exists in the Thoracic Section of Surgical Service for an Advanced Practice Nurse. The following are duties of the position: Performs initial histories and physical examinations on inpatients and outpatients. Prescribes medication within defined scope of practice. Orders diagnostic studies such as lab tests, x-rays, echocardiograms, electrocardiograms, CT scans and Bone scans. Incumbent screens consultations, conducts pre-operative workups, and participates in Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinic weekly. Draws blood specimens for testing and performing other comparable lab procedures. Makes daily rounds to observe and record each patient’s medical progress, updating and summarizing medical records, changing orders when appropriate, and notifying the responsible physician of significant changes in the patient’s condition. Provides education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and medications. Accountable for providing health care to veterans in accordance with individual patient needs determined by standards of adult health care practice, hospital policy and procedures, and in collaboration with other members of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Health Care Team. This responsibility includes the utilization of specialized and advanced Advanced Practice Nursing skills and knowledge in patient health and illness assessment, direct care, preventive health and other duties as assigned. Will work closely with Cardiothoracic Surgery residents and staff surgeons. Duties will also include dressing changes and wound care.

 The following is a list of skills and characteristics that are essential attributes/requirements for this new position:

a. The educational requirements are a Registered Nurse with at least three years successful nursing practice. Applicant must have a Master of Science Degree in Nursing from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited program and national board certification as an Acute Care Advanced Practice Nurse. Prescriptive authority is required.

b. Knowledge and ability to perform history and physical examinations on patients.

c. Knowledge and ability to coordinate preoperative work up for patients under the direct supervision of the medical staff, recognizing when the patient needs to be referred for evaluation of more complex medical conditions.

d. Knowledge and ability to assist the medical staff with the coordination of the surgery schedule to avoid preventable cancellations due to insufficient or inadequate preoperative work up or communication/transportation problems.

e. Excellent communication skills, which enable the individual to interact with patients, patient’s families, other VANTHCS staff, vendors and community agencies.

f. Has demonstrated ability to be self-directed in the clinical setting as reflected by effective communication, organizational, interpersonal and decision-making skills.

g. Knowledge of computers is required to include the ability to work with and access information in a computerized patient record system.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.    Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.   Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.     Education/Experience Requirements: 

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience. 
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
