The Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVAHCS) is seeking an experienced internist and dynamic physician-leader to serve as the Physician, Chief, Primary and Specialty Medicine Service Line.  Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Chief of Primary and Specialty Medicine Service Line is an integral part of the medical center's clinical leadership.

Principal responsibilities of the position include strategic planning for the medical center’s medicine subspecialty programs.  The incumbent will be assisted by an accomplished administrative team to oversee clinical and administrative operations.  Applicants should have demonstrated ability in teaching and directing patient care.  Prior administrative experience desirable. 

 

This position may be a full-time position or a 7/8 appointment at the ICVAHCS, with a joint paid appointment by the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.

 

The distinguished professional must possess a MD or equivalent, be Board Certified in Internal Medicine with or without subspecialty certification and must be eligibile for an academic appointment at the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine, and licensed. 

 

The ICVAHCS includes the level 1 tertiary care medical center with 83 licensed beds, seven surrounding community based outpatient clinics, and two more community based outpatient clinics opening within the year.  The system provides care to over 40,000 veterans and covers an area of 46 counties within eastern Iowa and western Illinois.  

 

Iowa City is located in the heart of the Midwest, with a population of 62,220; it is Iowa's fifth largest city.  Iowa City and its surrounding communities offer lots of amenities while still having small town charm.  The city of Iowa City presents an extensive range of programs that attract, entertain, and educate audiences, in addition to hosting numerous Big Ten athletic events.  The community often supports frequent professional, social, and leisure activities.  Additionally, private and public schools have outstanding academic, athletic, and cultural programs.  The Iowa City community provides a great place to live with affordable housing, safe neighborhoods, and a truly seasonal climate which allows for all types of outdoor activities throughout the year.  The city has over 1,200 acres of parks, playgrounds, hiking trails, and open spaces.  With its central location, weekend get-a-ways can include visiting large metropolitan cities in any direction, or traveling the back roads exploring the countryside. 

 

Salary range to commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Relocation expenses may be paid. Recruitment/relocation incentive may be authorized.

Licensure and Registration

 

     (1)  Physicians (Except Residents).  Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.  The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.  The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.

 

    


Education.  The distinguished professional must possess a MD or MD/PhD degree, be board certified, and licensed.

 

Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

 

For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1.
