The VA Medical Center located in Cincinnati, Ohio is currently seeking One (1) Permanent Full-Time Medical Support Assistant assigned to VA Eye Clinic (2929 Highland Ave., Cincinnati OH 45219) under Surgery Service/Department. The incumbent has the day-to-day responsibility of a team assistant for the administrative functions of the Eye Center. S/he provides administrative assistance to the Eye Center's professional staff and ensures that all administrative functions are completed in a timely and accurate manner to allow the physicians to provide quality patient care and to meet all of the team's objectives.

Obtain patient information, Conduct outpatient interviews, and guide patients through the outpatient system. Provide advice to professional/technical staff on eligibility determinations, and medical center procedures, policies and directives. Maintain a courteous, professional and helpful demeanor at all times in answering telephone calls or receiving patients, visitors or other guests.
Critical elements required in this position include processing all Release of Information requests in a timely manner following the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines. Coordinate specialty care team assignments for eligible veterans, monitoring the patient data base information to determine applicable co-payments for medical care, prosthetics and medications. Orients residents, interns and a variety of trainees on patient processing procedures, policies and procedures relating to administrative issues, with primary focus on access, appointment management and performance measure expectations.

(a) Experience or Education. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or 4 years of education above high school.
(c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:
1. Ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports.
2. Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
3. Ability to make appointments in a clinical setting.
4. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work.
5. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
6. Ability to identify customers concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.
