The incumbent performs all kinds of journeyman machinist tasks involved in the construction, repair, maintenance, overhaul and conversion of a wide variety of types and sizes of marine crafts and vessels.
Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:
* Machineing surfaces to closely interrelated dimensions or complex configurations, which requires special adaptation or extension of the use of conventional machine tools.
* Manufacturing a part or connector of two individual pieces which when installed will allow the pieces to work as a unit.
* Determining change gear ratios, pitch, lead and pitch diameter for various standard and nonstandard screw threads, worms and gear wheels.
* Interpreting and translating work orders, drawings and specifications that are often lacking in such items as dimensions, tolerances, and types of fits and finishes. * Performing machining operations on computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools, including shop floor programming.
* Machining castings, forging, bar stock of various metals and metal alloys.
* Aligning and securing workpiece on bed, turntable, or faceplate of machine, between centers, or in chunks, collets, or other fixed or moving holding devices.

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements:
* Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. (SCREENOUT FACTOR)
* Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
* Ability to use shop drawings
* Ability to use hand tools for machine shop
This position does not have a positive education requirement.
