The Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner provides specialty care to veterans with orthopedic health issues and is the key contact for patients with musculoskeletal dysfunction.  The Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner reports directly to the Chief of Orthopedics and to the specialty service line chief nurse executive.  Care is provided in the orthopedics clinic.

In addition to providing primary care in the orthopedic clinic, the Nurse Practitioner also provides care over the telephone, although they may interact with clinical psychology and other clinics within the hospital, and cross-train to orthopedic subspecialties, including casting and splinting application, operating room rotations, and inpatient care. 

Nurse Practitioner primary responsibilities include:

  1. Assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care of the patient with orthopedic issues.
  2. Initial screening, obtaining and interpreting diagnostic testing related to the patient with orthopedic issues.
  3. Management of the orthopedic patient from initial entry to the clinic to the completion of a satisfactory treatment option.
  4. Consults other clinics in the hospital when indicated.
  5. Provides general education regarding orthopedic problems to the patient, their partner, colleagues and other disciplines within the VAMC, the VISN and the medical community at large.
  6. Responsible for the development of orthopedic clinic policies and procedures as well as the development of patient education materials for patients with orthopedic concerns and their partners including written, video, or group education.
  7. Promotes overall wellness for the orthopedic patient, including non-pharmacologic treatment.
  8. Collaborates with other disciplines to provide a concise, comprehensive delivery of care to ensure positive health care outcomes and promote wellness.
  9. Encourages the development of healthy lifestyles.
  10. Acts as a consultant and resource to the VAMC staff and the community at large.
  11. Identifies and actively participates in orthopedic research. 
  12. Reviews incoming electronic consults to the service, prioritizing and facilitating access for urgent needs.
  13. Cleans RME (Reusable Medical Equipment) per SOP (Standard Operating Procedure)
  14. Administrative responsibilities include:

1. Coordinates performance improvement initiatives and collaborates with the chief of the service in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the orthopedic clinic.

2.    Communicates on a regular basis with all orthopedic clinic personnel regarding important clinic issues such as patient safety, patient confidentiality, and patient satisfaction. EDRP funding may be available for this position. Relocation expenses and/or incentives have not been authorized.

  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position.  A physical examination prior to employment may be required. 
  • Registration – Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA
  • Educational requirements can be met as follows:

         (1)  Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR

         (2)  The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. OR

         (3)  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

The following requirements are preferred for this position:

  • At a minimum, applicants should possess experience as an RN that is determined to be sustained and consistently at or above an acceptable level of quality.   This may include experience as a Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) provided that candidate was utilized as a professional nurse and passed the State licensing (board) examination on the first attempt, and experience as Nurse Technician Pending Graduation provided the candidate possessed an active, current registration to practice nursing in a State and was utilized as a professional nurse.  Professional nursing experience should be documented on the Application for Employment – Nurse and Nurse Anesthetists (VA Form 10-2850a).

Salary determination will be based on a recommendation by the Professional Standards Board and approved by the Medical Center Director.
