·         The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Automated Chemistry Technical Supervisor who supervises the work of four GS-09 civilian medical technologists and one GS-07 medical technician, provides guidance to approximately 20 military medical technicians who perform a variety of chemical analyses requiring accurate analysis and rapid turnarounds (e.g., samples from the emergency room, operating rooms, intensive care units), and performs technically demanding chemistry assays.

·         Assign, organize, perform, and review work to ensure chemistry workload is accomplished with established requirements and guidelines.  Assign work to be accomplished by subordinate employees, set and adjust priorities, and establish suspenses for completion of work.

·         Responsible for collection, maintenance, and review of quality control files for the Automated Chemistry Section.  Adhere to all safety directives concerning the wearing of personal protective gear: face shields, gloves, and laboratory coat.

·         Provide training in clinical laboratory chemistry.  Provide bench level instruction to Core Laboratory personnel, Phase II Medical Laboratory Technical students, and University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC) Medical Technology students in the operation of automated chemistry analyzers, manual clinical chemical procedures, instrument maintenance and theory, quality control, and troubleshooting-problem solving.

·         Perform method validation studies on new instruments/methods.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-09) or equivalent.  Specialized experience must include applying knowledge of professional medical technology principles, practices, and concepts sufficient to develop and establish procedures for chemistry determinations; performing more difficult and infrequent tests; evaluating, modifying, and implementing new methods; participating in the selection of supplies and equipment; applying practical knowledge to include statistical and quality control methods for ensuring validity of patient test results, good writing techniques for clear, concise, and accurate report of new procedure development or modifications to existing procedures for incorporation into standard operating procedure; effective teaching techniques to include in-depth preparation and presentation of lecture material directly related to applied medical technology techniques in clinical chemistry to provide training for newly assigned personnel, Phase II Laboratory students, Biomedical Laboratory Officer students, and pathology residents.

Federal Time-In-Grade (TIG) Requirement for General Schedule (GS) Positions:  Applicants must have served at least 52 weeks at the GS-09 or higher grade (or equivalent in an alternate pay system) within the Federal Civil Service to be considered for referral.  The purpose of TIG restrictions is to prevent excessively rapid promotions in competitive service GS positions and to protect competitive principles.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):  Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 

1.    Ability to perform STAT and routine technical procedures.

2.    Ability to follow oral or written instruction.

3.    Knowledge of theory of clinical chemistry, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology.

4.    Skill in troubleshooting automated chemistry and analyzer/method problems.

5.    Ability to communicate with peers and clinical hospital staff.

6.    Ability to ensure proper compliance with federal and local accrediting agencies.

7.    Ability to apply basic and specialized analytical methods and techniques to solve highly complex technical problems.

8.    Ability to interpret specialized testing results.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.  You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

1.    The technologist may be required to perform other tasks as requested by the Chemistry Technical Supervisor. 

2.    The technologist must have the qualifications of MT (ASCP) and/or certification as Clinical Laboratory Scientist with appropriate experience and education in clinical chemistry procedures.

3.    This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) and is therefore subject to the Air Force Civilian Drug Testing Plan.  A statement of acknowledgement must be signed by each incumbent.  Selectee may be subject to urinalysis testing prior to appointment and subject to random urinalysis testing as a condition of employment.

4.    Position works in a medical facility and is exposed to contagious illness, therefore the incumbent will participate as part of the TB/Hepatitis B testing and immunization program. 

5.    Employee is accountable for personal professional development, maintaining appropriate certifications (e.g., Basic Life Support) through periodic reassessment and exams and completing any mandatory training requirements.

6.    Position is subject to the provisions of AFI 44-102, Section P, governing off-duty employment restrictions.  Employee must sign a memorandum of understanding prior to in processing (usually at the time of the tentative selection).
