The VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) has one (1) full-time vacancy for Nursing Assistant on the Surgical Telemetry Unit. The Nursing Assistant performs a wide range of patient personal care, support diagnostic services, and treat and chart activities on a regular and continual basis on the surgical telemetry unit. The Nursing Assistant works a 12 hour shift with day/night rotations every other weekend. Overtime, weekends, and holiday work may be required.

 

Certification as Nursing Assistant and at least 1 year current experience in medical/surgical nursing care is preferred but not required.

The Nursing Assistant is a position within Nursing and Patient Care Services at the VA San Diego Health Care system. Under the supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse (RN), the Nursing Assistant (NA) functions as a member of the nursing team and assists the Registered Nurse and the Licensed Vocational Nurse in the care of patients in acute, sub acute, or chronic states of illness. The NA delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned patients while developing technical competencies.  The primary purpose of this position is to perform a very wide range of patient personal care, support diagnostic services, and chart activities on a regular and continual basis on a surgical, medical, neurological, rehabilitation, psychiatric or long-term care ward or clinic. The incumbent performs duties in such a way as to promote a sense of worth and dignity within each individual. The Medical/Surgical/Remote Telemetry Nursing Assistant is responsible for the evidence-based care of a group of patients, as follows : 1) support diagnostic procedures; 2) assist with technical nursing treatments; 3) provide care that incorporates the age, gender, cultural and learning needs of patients requiring basic planning and evaluation of care; 4) apply infection control measures appropriately in delivering care; 5) communicate with team members regarding patient care; 6) adhere to ethical principles and standards in delivering care; 7) enter information into patients’ records/charts; 8) apply knowledge and skill core competencies of the assigned unit to patient care; 9) use effective communication skills with co-workers to achieve desired patient outcomes; 10) provide teaching to patients; and 11) demonstrate mandatory and clinical competencies of the position. 

 

Relocation funding is not available.

This is a full-time, permanent position.

This is a bargaining unit position.

 

Work Schedule: 12 hour shift with day/night rotations every other weekend. Overtime, weekends, and holiday work may be required.

 

Physical Requirements: This position requires long periods of walking, standing, and moving about the work unit. The work requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, pulling, stooping, stretching, lifting, and repositioning adult patients, and/or similar activities. Requires one year of specialized experience OR successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation OR equivalent combinations of successfully completed related post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. A transcript or course listing must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

 

Specialized Experience: Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties, such as:

 

  • Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
  • Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
  • Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
  • Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.
