Salary and grade level is contingent upon a review and determination made by the Nurse Professional Standards Board based on education, qualifications, experience and credentials.

 

WORK SCHEDULE:  Day shift with weekend and after hours call.  Tour of duty will be determined by the Service.

As a Registered Nurse Practitioner you will support the Bipolar and Depression Program by seeing patients (both Veterans and non-veterans) with bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, anxiety and substance abuse issues. The Bipolar and Depression Research Program is a clinical research program focused on treatment of individuals with bipolar and major depressive disorders. It is located on the campus of the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Our research focuses on bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, including those that occur with generalized anxiety disorder or life time panic disorder, and substance abuse. We have several current studies underway including multiple medication treatment trials and a trial of an online educational intervention. Duties include, but may not be limited to: Publicizing studies in the medical center and community and identify potential study subjects for studies; Screening potential subjects by reviewing inclusion and exclusion criteria, reviewing medical records when appropriate, and using good clinical judgment; Explaining study rationale and procedures to prospective subjects and medical center staff; Educating subjects about medications, study protocol, and follow-up procedures;  Obtaining written informed consent from subjects to be enrolled; Obtaining and reviewing baseline and follow-up data; Scheduling required follow-up visits; Responsible for completing participant case report forms and entering the data into electronic data capture systems within the scheduled time frame as outlined in the protocols; and Creating and maintaining filling systems for studies that includes a file of all case report forms for each patient.

Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.

  1. Citizen of the United States. 
  2. Master's Degree graduated a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). 
  3. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.    
  4. Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  5. Maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.   Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.     Education/Experience Requirements: 

  • Nurse II - Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience. 
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

Additional requirement for this position:

Must have one (1) year of full-time experience as a licensed professional RNP.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Current 3 years of Research in Bipolar Disorder experience preferred.
