The incumbent is responsible for assisting in the operation of the Ophthalmology Clinic in making sure that an orderly flow of patients exists within the clinic.  Maintains administrative records and is responsible for ordering all supplies required to run the Ophthalmic Division of Surgical Service.  Assists in screening of patient's basic history.  Determines the distance and near visual acuity and checks the intra-ocular pressure by applanation tonometry.  Performs formal visual fields using the Goldman and Humphrey perimetry.  Fits and measures patients for spectacles and makes minor repairs and adjustments of eye glasses.  Incumbent is responsible for patient awareness of the rehabilitation programs available for low vision patients.  

Work Schedule:  9:00 am to 5:30 pm

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Time-in-grade:  There is no time-in-grade requirement for employment at the GS-5 level.  Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements for the GS-6 level.

Specialized Experience:  COA/COT is preferred but not required. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to:  performing formal visual fields, support duties to medical staff in the the treatment of patients, etc.  Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the position.

Qualification Requirements:  GS-5 Level:  Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-4) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.    GS-6 Level:  Applicants must have one year of specialized experience which is at least equivalent to the GS-5 level and one year time-in-grade at the GS-5 level.

Substitution of Education for Experience:  GS-5 Level:  Successful completion of four years of education in an accredited college or university with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. 

GS-6 Level:  Generally, there is no educational substitution for the GS-6 level.  Graduate education may be credited in those instances where the education is directly related to the work of the position.  Meeting the minimal qualification requirements in accordance with OPM Qualification Standards Handbook.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) based on your application for this position.

1.  Knowledge of and ability to perform precise diagnostic testing and perform assessments related to the ocular health of the patients.

2.  Knowledge of and ability to perform clerical duties.

3.  Knowledge of and ability to use the medical center's computer system (DHCP/VISTA).

4.  Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically, both orally and in writing.

5.  Ability to plan and organize work and set priorities.
