The Statistician (Health) position will be located at the Veteran Affairs (VA) Healthcare System, Jamaica Plain, MA.   Duties include but are not limited to the following:  

  • Consult with other senior researchers on statistical, analytical and methodological issues relevant to the study of trauma, trauma reactions, gender and women's health.
  • Serve as a leader/mentor/supervisor for junior researchers and trainees.
  • Provide collaborative and/or consultative assistance to others in conduct of studies relevant to women's health and trauma.
  • Apply knowledge of statistical/analytic techniques to analyze and interpret results of research study.
  • Conduct independent empirical research of a publishable nature.
  • Manage large-scale research databases.
  • Oversee scientific social science research design and methodology.
  • Develop grant proposals for funding; prepare research reports and professional publications.
  • Make local and national research presentations to various groups/conferences.
  • And other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday - 8AM - 4:30PM

Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration.  - The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: Expertise with advanced statistical analyses procedures and/or software e.g., SEM, HLM, Lisrel, STATA, etc. ~AND~

IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR, YOU MUST ALSO MEET THE FOLLOWING BASIC REQUIREMENT:   A bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited institution that included 15 semester hours in statistics (9 may be in mathematics related to statistics) and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following:   physical or biological sciences, medicine, pharmacy, education or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration or psychology.   Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements would be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods (you must send course descriptions to use this provision to qualify), e.g. courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processes. (*To verify this basic educational requirement, you must submit transcripts with your application.)~OR~ A combination of education as described in paragraph above and specialized experience that includes a full range of professional statistical work such as sampling, collecting, computing and analyzing statistical data, and applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. (*Your experience must be documented in your application/resume and you must submit transcripts with your application.)~AND~

IN ADDITION TO MEETING BOTH THE SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR AND BASIC REQUIREMENT LIST ABOVE, THIS POSITION ALSO REQUIRES: One (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level of Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include: gather and analyze data for clinical research programs, e.g., Women's Health, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), etc ; develop complex programs to create and analyze data using statistical software; conduct data analyses; organize and summarize results; maintain computerized databases; prepare reports and publications; prepare grant proposals and adminster Funded grants, and serve as a mentor/leader/supervisor for junior researchers and trainees.  (*Your experience must be detailed in your resume to receive full credit.)

Quality Ranking Factors * have been requested by the facility to help determine which of the basically qualified applicants are likely to be better qualified for a position. The quality ranking factors for this position are:

  • Be an expert in Women's Health and/or Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD).
  • Be a Doctoral level research scientist or have a PhD in e.g., Psychology, Statistics, etc.  

*Quality Ranking Factors are skills, knowledge, abilities, or other worker characteristics which could be expected to result in superior performance on the job. Quality ranking factors will not be used for screening, but may be used as ranking criteria. Applicants with higher proficiency levels may rank above those with lower proficiency levels on a quality ranking factor.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

  • Skilled in statistical/analytic techniques to include advanced statistical procedures and statistical software programs.
  • Ability to develop complex research protocol including development, implementation, and oversight of statistical analysis plans.
  • Ability to provide scientific leadership.
  • Ability to establish innovations in research that has an impact on patient care.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:   The employee's work will be primarily of a sedentary nature.

Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:

  • Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
  • Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
  • Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
  • Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
