JOB SUMMARY:

Stars and Stripes has reported first-hand on military conflicts since the Civil War and continuously since World War II by reporting information and news of interest and value. We offer the military community a choice of media to assure access by service members, their families, veteran's civilian employees, and other interested readers. Our news gathering and publishing activities are guided by the principles of a free press and are free of any and all outside control.

Stars and Stripes is looking for full time copy editors who will be responsible for editing wire and staff-produced stories and using a computer-based pagination system to lay out newspaper pages for our daily editions.  The editors will work on either the news or sports copy desk.

The incumbent serves as Page Layout Copy Editor (Central Operations) for the page layout, design and copy editing of Stars and Stripes publications. Performs substantive editing for news, sports, and/or feature pages and sections involving final proofreading and editing of articles to correct any spelling, typographical or grammatical errors, or to discover or estimate editorial problems involved. Ensures that material is clearly presented and appropriate for the level of audience and that conclusions are valid and supported. Designs and lays out assigned pages and sections in electronic publishing system, to include all elements (stories, photos, graphics). Writes accurate, complete and interesting headlines, captions and photo cutlines. Designs pages in a graphically attractive manner in keeping with newspaper layout and design techniques and Stars and Stripes style guides. Ensures all text is free of spelling, grammar, and substantive errors; that headlines and cutlines accurately state what is supported by the content of the story or photo. Produces pages in a timely manner to ensure production page flow is maintained and all deadlines are met. May review and select stories, graphics and photos that are staff-produced or from any of the various wire services, syndicates, free lance correspondents or acquired from other publications for reprint. Ensures all sources are properly credited according to Stripes style guide. Consults on photography and graphics. Copy edits articles and writes headlines and cutlines applying rules contained in the Associated Press (AP) and Stars and Stripes style guides. Ensures compliance with copyright, Privacy Act, and all other applicable laws, regulations, and policies. Ensures all assigned publications conform to or exceed the editorial standards and requirements specified in Stars and Stripes guidance.

Three years of specialized work experience directly related to the duties described above. Demonstrated work experience must include 1 year equivalent in complexity and difficulty to the next lower pay band level.

Preferred are those candidates who possess a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in journalism and related work experience as described above.


Conditions of employment:

 

1. A one-year probationary period may be required upon selection.
