This position is with the U.S Department of Labor/Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Buffalo Area Office.  The position is inside the bargaining unit.  Relocation expenses will not be paid.

This position is that of a Safety and Occupational Health Trainee.  The incumbent receives formal classroom and on-the-job training under a planned  program designed to progressively develop an understanding of basic  safety & health principles, safety & health standards, safety hazards,  work practices, and the use of OSHA technical and administrative  manuals.  Accompanies experienced safety specialists on investigations and  inspections in a variety of occupational activities. Assists in preparing reports in accordance with established procedures, by recording  observations made by trainer.  Reviews case files, citations issued, progress reports, etc., to  become familiar with the proper application of standards and the use  of the Field Operations Manual.  Becomes familiar with the use, maintenance, and calibration of equipment used in documenting safety hazards such as camera, noise level  meters, electrical testing meters, light meters, respirators. Also  becomes familiar with all personal protective equipment, including  respirators.  Operates a motor vehicle to travel to inspection sites.

Applicants must meet ONE of the following three requirements in order to qualify for this position:

1. General Experience: Three years of general Experience, one year of which is equivalent to the GS-4 level that includes Experience in scientific or technical work that provided an understanding of the basic principles and concepts of the safety and occupational health field. Creditable general experience must have demonstrated the achievement of knowledge equivalent to the education described below.

Or,

2. Education: Four year of study leading to a bachelor's degree in Major study such as safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

Or,

3. Professional Certificate: Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Health Physicist (CHP), or similar certification that included successful completion of a written examination meets the requirements for GS-5.
