JOB SUMMARY:

A career with the Forest Service will challenge you to manage and care for more than 193 million acres of our nation's most magnificent lands, conduct research through a network of forest and range experiment stations and the Forest Products Laboratory, and provide assistance to State and private forestry agencies.

This position serves as a hydrologist on a Forest Service unit with responsibility for conducting and interpreting hydrologic surveys and analysis, watershed rehabilitation and management planning, and providing technical guidance within the framework of multiple-use management of forest and range lands.

Participates in hydrologic investigations and studies required for planning and design of multi-purpose projects, such as collecting ground water data and analyzing trends; analyzing and interpreting stream flow data. 

Studies water resources data needed to support the Forest's position during negotiations and litigation. Translates these findings into long range prescriptions or plans for management's use in watershed management and/or water yield improvement.

Makes hydrologic analysis for cooperative watershed projects authorized under public law. Consults with other resource specialists in assessing the impacts of proposed programs and projects on watershed values.  Serves as project leader. Makes field investigations following fires to appraise damages to the watershed and recommend treatment for rehabilitation of the area.  Participates in the land management planning process.

Provides professional hydrologic input into the development of the Forest plan, which involves gathering data, analyzing data, and making recommendations. Participates as required in the development of environmental assessments or environmental impact statements. Assists in the preparation of discovery requests including responding to interrogatories, admissions, and document productions by coordinating with technical experts and Forest personnel in the preparation of responses and technical analysis.

Participates in deposition preparation, depositions, trial testimony, and development of affirmative discovery.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below:

Degree: physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels.

Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirements, the following additional education and/or experience are required to qualify at the GS-11 level. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the specialized experience requirements.

Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (coursework directly related to position being filled); one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level; and/or a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience.

Examples of specialized experience are: Provided input to the watershed management program by gathering, analyzing and interpreting watershed data; or and provided recommendations and prepared environmental analysis reports for land management and selecting standard methods and procedures to plan and carry out hydrological projects.

This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Occupational Questionnaire.
