NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) is known throughout the world as Mission Control and has served as the command center for human spaceflight since 1965. The NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Intern Employment Program (IEP) follows the Cooperative Education (Co-op) Model, which is a unique partnership among employers, students and universities whereby students gain work experience in engineering, science and business on an alternating semester basis. In our IEP, you will alternate between terms at school and a paid, full-time job at JSC. The unique aspect of JSC's IEP is that each work tour, you will rotate into a new functional area.
This job is directly related to your field of study and will help you gain invaluable work experience in several different areas before graduation. Additionally, at JSC, our IEP serves as a pipeline for future full-time employees.

At JSC, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to our continued work of building a new NASA vehicle to enable human deep space exploration, work on the operation and development of the International Space Station in cooperation with our Internal Partners, and work with industry to help foster the commercial space sector. Home to a diverse and innovative workforce of over 3,000 Federal employees, JSC is located about 25 miles southeast of downtown Houston.
Examples of possible assignments include:
Provide real-time flight control during International Space Station Missions
Develop robotics hardware and software that will support missions beyond low-Earth orbit
Test materials, propellants, and spacecraft systems
Work with our International Partners
Design the next generation of I/T systems and networks
Provide business management support to major programs
Procure ground and flight hardware
Develop Program, Planning, Budgeting, and Execution plans
Plan and prepare organizational budgets
Plan, award, and manage contracts
Conduct financial audits

NASA Pathways candidates will meet the qualification requirements consistent with NASA and the OPM qualification standards applicable to the position being filled. Where appropriate, candidates will be required to meet NASA's Aeronautics, Scientific, and Technical (AST) qualification standards for the position(s) for which they are applying.
For GS-4: Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study. (The 1 academic year is the equivalent of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.)
For GS-5: Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree. (The 2 academic years is the equivalent of 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours.)
For GS-6: Completion of 3 academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree. (The 3 academic years is the equivalent of 90 semester hours or 135 quarter hours.)
For GS-7: Completion of 4 academic years of study (or all the requirements) for a bachelor's degree and accepted into a master's program.
For GS-9: Completion of 1 academic year of master's level education or acceptance into a Doctoral program.
For GS-11: Completion of 1 year of Doctorate Level study or accepted into a Doctoral Program (Research).
The classification of the intern positions (series and grade) will depend upon the field of study and level of coursework of the candidate.

U.S. citizenship is required.
HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
Candidates will be assessed either based solely on basic eligibility requirements or may include a qualitative rating of candidates. NASA Pathways candidates will meet the qualification requirements consistent with the OPM qualification standards applicable to the position being filled. Where appropriate, candidates will be required to meet NASA's Aeronautics, Scientific, and Technical (AST) qualification standards for the position(s) for which they are applying. Veterans' preference applies to all selections made under the Pathways authority in accordance with Part 302 of 5 CFR. Candidates who meet the minimum qualification requirements need not be further evaluated; however, if no further evaluation is done, qualified veterans have absolute preference. If candidates are further evaluated using NASA's category rating process, qualified veterans have absolute preference within the appropriate category.

1) Salary at grade level based upon completion of specific number of academic years
2) Payment of travel and transportation expenses between the duty station and school may be offered
3) Tuition assistance may be offered for position-related courses taken during work hours
4) Reimbursement for school co-op fee may be offered

Students will be expected to start no later than 8/26/2013.
For engineering majors, must be enrolled at a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
3.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale is strongly preferred.
Students pursuing a four-year degree on a full-time basis is strongly preferred.
If offered employment by NASA, the student must be enrolled in the school's cooperative education program prior to the start date. If the school does not have a cooperative education program, the intern must provide documentation of good standing.
To be eligible for conversion to the competitive service after completion of the program, an intern must:
1) Be a U.S. Citizen
2) Successfully complete an academic course of study as evidenced by a qualifying degree
3) Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience under the Pathways Intern Program; specifically 3 work tours (technical students must complete 2 semesters and 1 summer; business students must complete 1 semester and 2 summers).
4) Meet the OPM qualification standard for the position to which the Intern may be converted
5) Maintain acceptable performance under the Agency's approved performance management system
6) Receive favorable recommendation for conversion from supervisor
