The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organizations.  ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture.

Major Duties:

Incumbent performs the following:

  • Compile long term daily evapotranspiration (ET), crop, fertilizer and tillage, and irrigation management datasets for hydrologic and water quality modeling;
  • Calibration and validation of SWAT/RZWQM/APEX for estimating major components of water budget, irrigation requirement, and crop yield;
  • Update embedded crop production functions and crop databases in the SWAT/RZWQM/APEX models; and 
  • Test and revise algorithms related to simulation of irrigation applications.

This position requires a recent Ph.D in Agricultural Engineering or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

 

Skills in soil water modeling, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), irrigation management, computer programming and modeling experience in SWAT/RZWQM/APEX and programming in Fortran are desirable. Knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of hydrology, soil physics, irrigation design and management, and geology are also desirable.



Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
