This vacancy is for one IT Specialist (Systems Administration) position in the Desktop Virtualization Branch, LAN Technology Support Office located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland.

One year probationary period may be required.

Relocation expenses may be paid.

This is a nonbargaining unit position.

This position may be filled through means other than the competitive promotion process.

The individual selected for this position will:

*Major Duty 1 Plans, organizes, directs, and maintains an extensive and highly complex Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).

*Major Duty 2 Utilizes industry standard best practices to maintain the VDI environment.

*Major Duty 3 Formulates overall design concepts and criteria that establish the baseline for advancement of state-of-the-art engineering developments.

*Major Duty 4 Ensures the high availability of the operational state of VDI.

*Major Duty 5 Resolves unusually critical and severe technical problems.

*Major Duty 6 Communicates with senior executives, high-ranking officials and/or corporate officers in a variety of ways, on a consistent basis, to create a positive working relationship and keep them abreast of VDI related status, issues and/or achievements.

You must have and your resume must detail how you meet the specialized experience AND information technology-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies described below.


  1. Attention to Detail - Meticulous; thoroughly reviews and proofreads various IT related data/information; dedicates focus to accomplish tasks that are complete, precise, and accurate to a given IT situation.
  2. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive IT services or IT products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess IT needs, provide expert technical information or assistance, resolve fairly complex or non-routine problems, or satisfy expectations; knowledge of available products and services; committed to providing quality IT products and services.
  3. Communication - Expresses technical information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing presentations; listens to others, recognizes potential miscommunication, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  4. Problem Solving - Identifies IT related problems using a variety of materials or sources; gathers and applies technical information to determine accuracy and relevance to moderately complex problems; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives; makes decisions or recommendations that influence IT policies or programs and applies new developments to previously unresolved problems.


You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level.  Examples of specialized experience include reviewing project requirements to determine objectives; allocating system resources; maintaining system configuration; managing the integration and installation of systems fixes, enhancements and updates; ensuring managed desktops are regularly updated with required IT security policies; communicating desktop-related policies and procedures with internal staff, management and program area staff; providing oversight of help desk call response and resolution; managing installation and integration of systems fixes, updates and enhancements; managing accounts, network rights, access to systems and equipment, and administering passwords; monitoring performance, capacity, availability, serviceability and recoverability of installed systems; resolving hardware and software interface and interoperability problems; and planning and scheduling installation of new or modified hardware, operating systems, and applications software.
