This position is being filled in the excepted service under the Pathways Program.  This is a planned and progressive education program that offers valuable work experience directly related to a student’s academic field of study.  After successfully completing your education and meeting agency work requirements, you may be converted to a term, career, or career-conditional appointment.

Schedule may vary to accommodate the student's school schedule during the school year and/or full-time during the summer and school breaks.

As a trainee, you will perform a variety of developmental assignments of progressive difficulty in functional specialties of civil engineering.  Assignments are designed to improve the trainee’s grasp and understanding of civil engineering.  Ideal candidate for this position is an individual pursuing undergraduate degree program in civil engineering at a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).  Candidates will be considered on the basis of the applicability of their education and experience.

Under the close direction of the supervisor or higher graded employee, the incumbent performs, assists in, and/or continues to learn about the specialized work of their assigned area through developmental assignments, such as:  

- Reviewing and analyzing rights-of-use applications for engineering soundness and compatibility with Reclamation design standards and compliance with state or local codes.  Applications include design submittals for roads, bridges, culverts, utilities, signs, foundations, and footings;

- Advising project proponents of Reclamation design standards and answer their questions;

- Assisting the Senior Civil Engineer in coordinating and tracking the land acquisition functions associated with the Central Utah Project Completing Act;

- Performing land management functions for specific assigned project areas;

- Assisting in coordinating the AutoCAD and GIS functions for the Lands Group.

Must be attending an accredited college or university at least part-time, seek a degree in Civil Engineering and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.

GS-3:  Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study. 

GS-4:  Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree.
