The Student Trainee (Civil Engineer) - PATHWAYS intern will work in the Transportation Operations Research and Development Office and perform the following duties:

• Review existing literature on various traffic operations, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) topics and prepare synthesis of research studies and findings.

• Use traffic modeling and simulation to study operational benefits of innovative road treatments such as intersections and interchanges.

• Use simulation models to study sustainability for all road users including environmental impacts of road treatments, operations strategies, and travel demand management.

• Prepare experimental design and conduct field data collection such as traffic counts, speed, travel time, occupancy, conflict measures, data recording, storage, management and post-processing.

• Extend the simulation and analysis of integrated corridor management modeling to demonstrate and communicate their potential.

• Evaluate new traffic signal control strategies that take advantage of capabilities and data provided by ITS technologies.

• Prepare annotated outline of research projects and write technical papers and summary reports for peer reviews and publications.

• The student shall have the capability to offer technical support to FHWA Division offices and Resource Centers, and run case problem analysis of unique highway conditions for site specific problems, prepare analysis reports, and prepare presentations.

Applicants must be pursuing a degree in professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

You must meet the education requirements for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.

GRADE 07 Completion of one academic year of graduate level education; OR eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision after completing a bachelor’s degree (http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/policy/ApplicationOfStds-04.asp) as defined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook; OR five academic years of pre-professional study.

*Superior Academic Achievement- In the upper one-third of graduating class; OR a GPAof 3.0 or higher out of 4.0, as recorded on official transcript, or based on courses completed during final 2 years of curriculum; OR a GPA of 3.5 or higher out of 4.0, based on average of required courses completed in major or required courses in major completed during the final 2 years of curriculum.

If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement. Interns will work full-time during the summer and may work a flexible part-time work schedule during the school year (based on agency needs) while continuing their education.
