These positions are being re-advertised to correct the pay range.  Hopewell Furnace National Historical Site and Valley Forge National Historical Park are on two different pay tables.

These positions are located within the Division of Maintenance at both Hopewell Furnace National Historical Site and Valley Forge National Historical Park. The primary purpose of the position is to perform moderately heavy physical labor requiring the use of common hand tools and power equipment.  In order to accomplish the laborer duties you must on a regular and recurring basis also operate light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds (such as pick-up trucks, panel trucks, etc).  We hope to fill this position as soon as possible.  This is a Temporary Appointment not-to-exceed 1039 hours in a service year. The employment season is expected to last 1039 hours.   Core hours are 7:00-3:30.  Maintenance Operations are 7 days a week.  Employee may be expected to work weekends.    The work schedule may be adjusted due to fluctuating work demands or budgetary reasons.    Selectee may only work 1,039 hours in a service year.   This position may be terminated at any time due to lack of work or lack of funds.   Selectee may be eligible for non-competitive rehire in future seasons depending on work demands and budget resources.

*Operate heavy power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, brush chippers, portable snow blowers, and all types of light hand and light power tools (such as shovels, rakes, axes, chainsaws, etc) to maintain buildings, grounds, roads, trails, etc.

*Loads and unloads supplies.

*Digs ditches, cuts trees, or performs other duties requiring moderate to very  physical effort.

*Transports personnel, material, or equipment to work sites.

*Performs janitorial duties.

 

Physical demands – The work performed requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort.  The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance. 

 

Working conditions –    Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions and/or extreme temperatures.  Indoor work is often accomplished in office building or in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops.  Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt with the possibility of bruises, muscle, strains, cuts, and scrapes.  Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures, and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protection, safety glasses, and steel toe shoes to avoid possible hazards.

The hardships of the encampment claimed the lives of one in ten, nearly all from disease. Despite the privations suffered by the army at Valley Forge, Washington and his generals built a unified professional military organization that ultimately enabled the Continental Army to triumph over the British.

http://www.nps.gov/hofu - Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site is one of the finest examples of a rural American 19th century iron plantation. The buildings include a blast furnace, the ironmaster's mansion, and auxiliary structures. Hopewell Furnace was founded in 1771 by Ironmaster Mark Bird. The furnace operated until 1883.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement,  Wednesday, January 30, 2013.  Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118c, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupation. To be eligible for this position, you must meet the screen-out element as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below. Applicants who fail to meet the screen out element will be rated ineligible, without further review.

 

The Screen-Out Element for this position is:  The ability to do the work of a Laborer (Motor Vehicle Operating) without more than normal supervision. 

 

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must show that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.   Qualification requirement emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

 

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience regardless of whether compensation was received or whether the experience was gained in a part-time or full-time occupation.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Your rating will be based on both your responses to the Job Assessment Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume. Category Group I (Best Qualified) - applicants who possess experience and/or education that well exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position, including all selective factors and all quality ranking factors. Applicants considered best qualified must be highly proficient in all requirements of the job and be able to perform effectively in the position. 
Category Group II (Well Qualified) - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job.
Category Group III (Qualified) - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all of the requirements of the job.
