The position is located in the US Attorney's Office, Criminal Division of the Austin office. If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for enforcing Federal criminal and civil laws that protect life, liberty and the property of citizens. You will provide support to the Austin Office performing duties as the Receptionist and support Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by providing a variety of legal assistance and office support services. If selected, you will receive formal and/or on-the-job training as needed. Typical work assignments will include:

  • promptly, professionally and courteously receives telephone calls and visitors to the Austin office;
  • control access to the office and insures visitors are cleared and authorized entry;
  • provides a variety of legal assistant support to staff members including preparation of correspondence;
  • provides a wide variety of procedural and office support services to include scheduling appointments, meetings, engagements, and conferences;
  • receives and reviews incoming correspondence and forwards to the appropriate staff member;
  • maintains a variety of legal and general office files;
  • searches files for material used in a variety of recurring reports. Assembles file data into the proper format;
  • other related duties in support of the mission

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Travel Required: Occasional for training.

GS-5: To be eligible at the GS-5 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level; OR four years of education above the high school level; OR a combination of both specialized experience and education as explained below.  Specialized experience is defined as experience performing various clerical/administrative duties in support of the operation of an office (for example, reviewing or processing routine documents, maintaining files, routing in-coming mail, responding to phone inquiries, and typing correspondence).

Combining Education and Experience: Successful completion of post-high school education may be used to meet the total one year of specialized experience requirement to the GS-4 level.  Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.  One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

GS-6:   To be eligible at the GS-6 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level.  Specialized experience is defined as experience reviewing documents with legal implications for accuracy and completeness (e.g., court documents, real estate documents, contracts, insurance or benefits claims, mortgage or loan applications, tax forms, or other types of legal documents); typing and formatting correspondence and forms; maintaining file systems; and obtaining needed information from files or general reference sources. 

GS-7: To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level.  Specialized experience is defined as experience providing assistance to attorneys by preparing complaints, motions, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents; typing a variety of documents accurately and in proper format; and assisting with discovery, hearing, or trial preparation.

To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)

All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at a college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools that meet this criteria, see

Your application will be evaluated and rated under DOJ’s Category Rating and Selection Procedures. Your resume and supporting documentation will be used to determine whether you meet the job qualifications listed on this announcement. If you are basically qualified for this job, your resume and supporting documentation will be compared to your responses on the Occupational Questionnaire. If you rate yourself higher than is supported by your application materials, your responses may be adjusted and/or you may be excluded from consideration for this job.
