This position is located in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Legal Division. The Legal Division is responsible for providing legal advice on all CFPB programs and activities and for representing the Bureau in court.

The incumbent of this position will provide a wide variety of legal support services in support of the legal staff in the Legal Division.  The incumbent will also perform a variety of administrative and clerical support duties.  Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Initiates and composes standardized Legal Division or Bureau documents routinely needed for specific purposes such as micro-purchases, travel, or legal actions using standard office tools such as the Microsoft Office suite.  Assists attorneys in case preparation, assembling exhibits, affidavits and other documents.  Assembles and organizes files and records for attorneys.
  • Represents the Division in meetings pertaining to the operation of the Legal Division and reports back as necessary.
  • Establishes, maintains, and closes case files or systems of legal records, annotates indices and status records, compiles workload and status reports, and locates and abstracts data from files and records.
  • Assists attorneys in researching pleadings, briefs, and other legal documents on questions relating to legal matters of interest to the Legal Division.
  • Arranges interviews of candidates for positions in the Legal Division and reschedules or rearranges them as necessary.
  • Responds to telephone and electronic inquiries, and provides routine information.  Refers complex and legal related inquiries to an appropriate individual for response.
  • Serves as the Division’s primary timekeeper and corrects problems with time records; schedules work-related events; drafts and edits correspondence; controls incoming and outgoing correspondence for the Division; and serves as the Division’s purchasing cardholder as well as point of contact for all office supplies, including furniture.  
  • Makes travel arrangements for Division staff, including preparing itineraries and securing transportation and hotel reservations.
  • Maintains and adds to the Division’s law library by purchasing books and other resources needed by the Legal Division after obtaining approval from the Office of the COO.  Arranges for the purchase and maintenance of legal materials needed by attorneys.
  • Prepares reports as required to monitor the travel budget and authorizations and for purchasing card approving officials.
  • Follows all Federal and Bureau requirements regarding Records Management, Privacy, FOIA, Transparency, Ethics, and Procurement. Attends and participates in all mandatory training or Bureau events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Specialized Experience for the CN-33 level: To qualify at the CN-33 level, you must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the CN-32 level in the Federal service. (For qualification purposes, the CN-32 level is broadly equivalent to the GS-06 level.) For this position, specialized experience is defined as experience working in an administrative support capacity for legal professionals such as in a law firm, legal division, or other similar department with a focus on legal matters.  Experience should include reviewing and summarizing documents, preparing draft summaries of cases or other materials for use by attorneys or other professionals, and maintaining case files or systems of legal records. Qualifying experience must have included use of automated and other reference sources and commonly used research procedures and methods to locate, analyze and prepare information. Experience must also include serving as a timekeeper using an automated timekeeping system.  Please identify by name in your resume submission those automated and other reference sources you have used in your relevant legal experience. The experience may have been gained in either the public or private sector. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.

Category rating procedures will be used to rank and refer eligibles.  Based on your responses to the online questionnaire, you will be assigned a score.  Your score will determine in which of the three categories you will be placed: Categories A, B, or C. Under this process, veterans will be assigned to the appropriate category (without additional preference points) and then placed at the top of their category. 

Qualified veterans with a service-connected disability of 10% or more will be placed at the top of the highest quality category.
