This position is located within the PC MENTAL HEALTH at the CAPT James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) in North Chicago, IL.  The FHCC is a first-of-its-kind partnership between the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), and Department of Navy (DoN)/Department of Defense (DoD).  It is larger than just a single facility, but rather it is a fully-integrated medical care facility with a single combined VA and Navy mission.  The combined mission of the FHCC means active duty military and their family members, military retirees, and eligible veterans receive health care at this facility.  Additionally, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is the largest single provider of graduate medical education training sites in the U.S., with as many as one-third of the nation's resident physicians receiving part or all of their training in VA health care facilities.  The Lovell FHCC supports this tradition through our various affiliations.

Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team giving nursing care to varying groups of psychiatric patients, including medically infirmed and aggressed patients. Is accountable to all patients particularly for the care of the severely depressed, withdrawn, hyperactive and suicidal. Works with individual and small groups of patients under the direct supervision of a nurse, leads or co-leads re-motivation and reality orientation groups. Provides a safe, clean team, admits and orients patients to unit, prepares patients for and assist with physical examinations and diagnostic procedures. Takes and records vital signs, collects specimens, does clinic tests, provides complete, concise, factual information concerning patient through verbal and/or written documentation. Attend all mandatory continuing education, in-services and nursing conferences. Does all therapeutic interventions in the treatment plan and/or written assignment sheet.

At the GS-5 grade level: Applicants must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the federal service that provide the specific knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.

Specialized Experience is:  Non professional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aide performing duties such as: Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre-and post-operative care; support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as : setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus; caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.


SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: applicants must possess at least four years of education above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree with courses related to the occupation.


Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. It will be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level.

Physical Requirements:  Work requires standing, walking, stooping, stretching, lifting and physical exertion as you assist the patient with activities of daily living, RMS activities or physical restraints.

Working Conditions:  Patients may be suicidal, hostile, homicidal, escape risks, possess a low level of understanding or be dangerous and assaultive toward self, personnel and other patients, potentially dangerous articles must be removed from the immediate area. Equipment, treatments, lifting and moving patients may be hazardous. Patients may have communicable infectious diseases.

Time-in-Grade Restrictions Apply - Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. The grade may have been in any occupation but must have been held in the Federal service.
