JOB SUMMARY:

About the Position:

  • This position is located in the Department of Medicine.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain within one year the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) certification or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) certification.

    You will produce two-dimensional (2-D) ultrasonic recordings, motion mode (M-Mode), and Doppler flow analyses (i.e., continuous wave, pulse wave, and color flow mapping) of the heart and related structures, using ultrasound equipment, for use by physician in diagnosis of heart disease and studies of the heart. You will perform echocardiographic studies on active duty and retired military and their family members. You will work closely with the supervising physician in the actual performance of the ultrasound examination. This is particularly important in the study of patients with technically difficult echocardiograms or studies that are contusing, non-diagnostic, or that requires ancillary techniques or interventions. You will review test results with interpreting physician. You will keep abreast of new developments and adaptations of equipment and techniques through literature and participation in training. You will perform a variety of support activities such as maintenance of patient records, scheduling of patients (walk-in and telephonic appointments), assuring timely ordering of supplies, performing minor maintenance of equipment, and recognizing and reporting malfunctions before serious damage occurs to the equipment.

  • Specialized Experience: One year of experience in the same or similar work equivalent to at least the next lower level (GS-07) requiring application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position being filled. Candidates for this position must clearly demonstrate in their resume that they possess specialized experience which includes providing ultrasonic recording of the heart and related structures; maintaining echocardiography equipment; and explaining cardiac procedures to patients or reviewing the results with the interpreting physician.

  • Education Substitution for Specialized Experience: Two full years of graduate education or a masters degree meets the requirement for this position only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.

  • Combination of Education and Experience: You have some but not all of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you do have. To do so, compute the percentage of your requirements met, the sum of which must equal at least 100%. (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages.)
