This Nursing Assistant must be able to work in an acute behavioral health setting within an interdisciplinary team, co-lead psycho-educational groups under supervision of RN, assist behavioral health patients with activities of daily living skills.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have one year of full-time1 specialized experience. This experience must be close to the work of this job and has given you the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of Nursing Assistant.




EDUCATION: To qualify based on education2 you must have successfully completed four years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree. This education must have been obtained in an accredited community college, junior college, college, or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.




Combination3 of Education and Specialized Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.

1A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.  Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.  Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.


2A transcript must be submitted if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. 

3To calculate the combination of education and experience, determine the amount of experience you have as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level.  Then determine the amount of education you have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level.  Add the two percentages; the total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify for the grade level. 

Example:  the position to be filled is an Editorial Assistant, GS-5.  The applicant has 9 months of specialized experience and 75 semester hours of college (15 semester hours beyond the second year and the equivalent of 3 months of specialized experience.  The applicant meets 75 percent of the required experience and 25 percent of the required education.  The applicant meets 100% of the requirement for one year of specialized experience and is qualified for the position.

Foreign Education:  To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require extensive periods of standing, sitting and walking. Working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching and similar activities. The employee provides physical restraints for confused or combative patients as necessary. He/she may on occasion, be assigned to any nursing section. He/she must be physically able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.


REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS: Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Must complete BERT training within six months of position attainment

One year specialized experience, required
