POSITION SUMMARY: The incumbent will be assigned to the 5 day per week, Outpatient Pharmacy Department of the Brockton division of VA BHS.  The primary mission of this department is discharge prescription support of the Long term care and transitional care patients. In addition, prescriptions are processed for Primary Care and specialty clinics, some of which are distributed via mail-out. The incumbent works in a technologically advanced environment with full computerized provider order entry and an computer-connected patient call center.  The incumbent will be expected to operate and maintain equipment in this automated department utilizing Script Pro technology. Good communication skills are necessary to effectively converse with patients and staff telephonically as well as face to face. Duties assigned may include interfacing with patients at the in / out window, triaging calls from patients as well as health care professionals, filling prescriptions, maintaining automation, operating automation, processing mail-out prescriptions, processing orders for medical supplies and assisting with inventory management processes.

WORK SCHEDULE: Full Time -   Daytime hours: Tour of Duty will be five 8 hour shifts rotating between 8-4:30 & 9:00-5:30.   May be required to work other approved tours as deemed necessary.

NOTE:  This position is a NAGE Bargaining Unit position.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Citizen of the United States: 

·         Education or Experience.  A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.

One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. 

Assignments:  Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists.  For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. 

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.

APPLICANTS MEETING THE QUALIFICATION STANDARDS WILL BE EVALUATED ON THE FOLLOWING DEMONSTRATED KSAO’S FOR THE GS-5: 

(a)  Education or Experience.  Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level.  In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

 

(b)  Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

      1.  Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.

      2.  Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.

      3.  Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.

      4.  Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.

 

(c)  Assignments.  This is the full performance level for pharmacy technicians.  Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and require minimal supervision.
