JOB SUMMARY:

A career with the Forest Service will challenge you to manage and care for more than 193 million acres of our nation's most magnificent lands, conduct research through a network of forest and range experiment stations and the Forest Products Laboratory, and provide assistance to State and private forestry agencies.

This position serves as a Logistics Support Dispatcher located in a dispatch center. This may be a single agency dispatch office or interagency dispatch center. The area covered may include federal, state and private lands within the dispatch center’s area of influence. The center is to respond to all-hazard incidents as needed or directed.

This is a continuously open vacancy announcement for one or more locations throughout the Forest Service. The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs.

TEMPORARY OPEN CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT: Most positions are expected to start in April and be filled through September. There may be some positions that start earlier and/or end later. Applicants are encouraged to apply early in the recruitment process. The first certificate of candidates will be issued to the hiring unit no sooner than five working days after the opening date of the announcement. Additional certificates will be issued upon request from the hiring unit. When there are no applicants for specific locations, the search area may be broadened when generating certificates to include locations in the closest city nearby. Some positions will have varying work schedules. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time and will involve working weekends or irregular work hours. Considerable travel may be required. Some positions involve work that requires travel away from the official duty location to remote worksites within commuting distance (49 miles).

Positions may be filled as a temporary appointment up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year which can be extended 1 additional year.

Participates in the management of the organization by performing routine administrative and miscellaneous clerical duties. Answers and screens all emergency calls, personal telephone inquiries relative to the activities of the dispatch office when the information required can be supplied from own knowledge of departmental operations or can be located in office files or records. Refers calls to other personnel or component organizations as appropriate. Maintains office files, searches for and withdraws material when requested. Compiles statistical data reports, charts or records. Extracts data from documents and posts or tabulates. Verifies accuracy of computations or computer quantities. Receives, sorts, routes incoming mail or correspondence and makes distribution. Uses standard computer hardware/software programs and procedures to input, update, review, and/or retrieve data. Utilizes special computer programs within dispatch in assisting personnel before and when on an emergency scene. Compiles information in appropriate computer software. Provides critical logistical support information to supervisor and makes recommendations concerning the efficient use of available resources. Shares pertinent information with cooperators and other interested entities. Gathers information for the development and maintenance of the dispatch mobilization guide and internal dispatch operating guides. Transcribes and maintains all telephone and two-way radio transmissions in appropriate communication logs.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-05: I have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04: Specialized experience is defined as: Performed a full range of standardized emergency dispatching duties in accordance with established processes, methods, and procedures, such as common tasks to support the dispatching of emergency equipment, resources, and supplies for fighting fires, processed resource orders through established dispatching channels. Informed supervisors of logistical support activities and dispatched additional resources. Recorded and maintained communication logs involving telephone and two-way radio transmissions.–OR

Successful completion of 4 years of study above high school. -OR

A combination of education and experience listed above.

This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Occupational Questionnaire.
