The Economic Research Service (ERS) conducts broad programs of economic and other social science research and analysis relating to agriculture, food, natural resources and rural America for use by public and private decision makers. ERS' clients are the executive and legislative branches; environmental, consumer and public interest groups, including farm and industry groups; and the general public.
The Food Economics Division (FED) provides economic research, monitoring and statistical indicators, and staff and policy analysis of consumer, and food marketing issues, including consumption determinants and trends; consumer demand for food quality, safety, and nutrition; food security status of the poor; food market competition and condition; low-income assistance programs; and food safety regulations.
The Diet, Safety, and Health Economics Branch (DSHE) provides economic analysis related to consumer behavior and food choices; cost of unsafe food and poor diets; benefits of improved health, nutrition and food safety; role of regulation, public policy, education and information in affecting diets, food safety, and health outcomes; food demand and consumption trends; and time use for food shopping, preparation, and consumption. The Branch supports USDA decision making on programs and policies in the areas of food safety, nutrition, obesity, and consumer dietary behavior.

1. Degree: A bachelors (or higher) degree in economics that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the Basic Requirements listed above:
GS-15: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level in the Federal service which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience planning and leading a complex economic research program involving current food safety, nutrition, and health issues and managing the dissemination of research findings and analyses.
Time-in-grade restrictions apply for all candidates considered under merit promotion procedures.

- Knowledge of current economic issues governing the development of food safety, nutrition, and health policies.
- Skill in using a wide variety of technical materials to disseminate economic findings to various audiences.
- Ability to provide economic advice and counsel to public and private stakeholders.
- Skill in the development and justification of budgets to ensure program accountability and resource allocation for a major operating program.
