The Pretrial Services Agency for the District of Columbia (PSA) assists judicial officers in both the Superior Court for the District of Columbia and the United States District Court for the District of Columbia by formulating release recommendations.  PSA also provides supervision and treatment services to defendants that reasonably assure that those on conditional release return to court and do not engage in criminal activity pending their trial and/or sentencing. As a Biological Science Laboratory Technician, you are a valued member of a dynamic team of lab personnel. You will use your knowledge to ensure quality assurance of all specimens analyzed and the results are accurate, scientifically correct and forensically sound.


Typical work assignments include: 

1. Performs the full range of and assures proficiency in all phases of immunoassay testing. Follows strict chain of custody procedures, established protocols and Laboratory policy. Performs quality assurance reviews of all specimens analyzed to ensure that results are accurate, scientifically correct and forensically sound.

2. Performs tests for drugs on biological specimens, primarily using urine immunoassay techniques. Reviews immunoassay test results for accuracy and completeness and determines the need for and performs repeat tests according to Laboratory protocol. 

3. Responds to basic inquiries on testing.

4. Performs and documents all required maintenance and calibrations for the immunoassay instruments, and performs troubleshooting in accordance with Laboratory procedure.

5. Manages inventory for immunoassay screening and for other parts of the Laboratory; prepares reagents, ensuring that supplies are adequate, and that reagents are certified in accordance with standard procedures and protocols.

6. Identifies technical or procedural problems in assigned areas in immunoassay testing; analyzes technical aspects of problems and recommends solutions.

7. Performs other duties as assigned to support the work of Laboratory.

To qualify for this position, you must meet the specialized experience requirement below.


GS-07: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience related to the duties of the position that was comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level. Examples of this experience are: performing quality assurance reviews, reviewing immunoassay test results, performing and documenting required maintenance for immunoassay instruments, and managing inventory.


Substitution of Education for Experience for the GS-07: One full year of graduate level education related to the position.

1. Skill in laboratory testing of biological specimens in a science laboratory and in evaluating results.

2. Ability to apply chain of custody requirements for control of specimens in a laboratory environment.

3. Skill in operating analytical instruments used in conducting immunoassay analyses and in the use of automated systems to document testing data.
