This is a Forestry Technician (Timber Sale Prep) position located on the Coconino National Forest, at the Mormon Lake Work Station. The position has responsibilities in Timber Sale Preparation for silviculture on the Flagstaff Ranger District.

Timber position duties include independently applying silvicultural prescriptions to designate and mark harvest timber. Prepares, collects tree measurements and computer processes cruise data and traverses harvest unit boundaries to determine acreage for future timber sales. Serves as a qualified timber cruiser.

Basic Qualifications: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience directly related to this position should be documented in the online application or resume. 

 

Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:  

 

For the GS-6 position, in addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have had one (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to GS-5. Examples of specialized experience include: Independently applied the instructions issued in a cruise plan; traversed harvest unit boundaries, road locations, and determined area; independently applied silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber; prepared and computer processed cruise data.

For the GS-7 position, in addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have had one (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to GS-6. Examples of specialized experience include: Summarized cruising and marking data and prepared reports; prepared area maps and marked boundaries; while under the supervision of a professional forester, and using pre-established marking rules, selected and marked trees to be harvested or left uncut; estimated volume, defect, and quality of timber in a given area.

 

Substitution of Education for Experience:

The experience requirements for the GS-7 level may be met by completion of one (1) year of graduate level education in a position-related field of forestry or natural resources management.  The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university by the U.S. Department of Education and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

For the GS-6 there is no substitution of education for experience for this position.

Combination of Education and Experience:  

Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements at the GS-7 level.

For the GS-6 there is no combination of education and experience for this position.

Applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements established for the position will be placed in the Eligible category. This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Occupational Questionnaire.
