This is a Student Internship opportunity under the Pathways Program.

NIST currently has an internship position located in the Material Measurement Laboratory, Chemical Sciences Division, Chemical Informatics Research Group.  The incumbent will calculate three-dimensional molecular structures using methods in quantum chemistry.


  • You must be a U.S. citizen.
  • You must be registered for selective service (as applicable).
  • You must be suitable for Federal employment.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying institution

Major duties:

  • Calculate three-dimensional molecular structures using methods in quantum chemistry.
  • Validate chemical compound information in the NIST Chemistry WebBook, such as:(International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry(IUPAC), common, trade), Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) number, molecular formula, compound class, and 2-D/3-D molecular structure using SciFinder, ChemBio Draw, and other resources on Linux and Windows computers.

Basic Requirements:

This position has a positive education requirement.  Applicants must be pursuing a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics.

Special Instructions for Foreign Education: Qualifying education from colleges and universities in foreign countries must be evaluated in terms of equivalency to that acquired in U.S. colleges and universities. Applicants educated in whole or in part in foreign countries must submit sufficient evidence, including transcripts, to an accredited private organization for an equivalency evaluation of course work and degree. A listing of these accredited organizations can be found on the Department of Education's website - You must provide a copy of the letter containing the results of the equivalency evaluation with a course by course listing along with your application. Failure to provide such documentation when requested will result in lost consideration.

To be eligible for an Internship opportunity you must meet one of the following criteria:

You must be a current student enrolled at least half time in:

  • An accredited high school
  • A College (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges)
  • A Professional, technical, vocational, and trade school
  • An advanced degree program
  • Or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

You will be on a trial period throughout your entire Pathways appointment.

This position is covered by an Alternative Personnel Management System (APMS). This system replaces the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and grades with career paths and pay bands.
