Salary to be determined by the Medical Instrument Technician Professional Standards Board. 

This position is assigned to the Gastroenterology Section of Medical Service.  The incumbent functions as the primary person for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during GI procedures such as: argon plasma cautery, colonoscopy, cytology, digestive tract biopsies, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), etc.  Coordinates activities of unit with Day Surgery, inpatients units and other departments within the hospital to optimize flow of patient care activity in the Gastroenterology Endoscopy Unit (GI Lab).  Works in collaboration with physician and RN during procedure.  Prepares procedural rooms for the performance of GI procedures.  Sets up and ensures proper functioning of equipment prior to procedure.  Plans and discusses each procedure with the GI Team and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the GI procedures.  Performs direct patient support work including personal patient care.  Identifies and reports data relative to more complex, non-routine patient situations including subtle changes in patients’ behavior or condition or variances related to neurological signs, vital signs or other parameters.  Performs direct patient support work to include collecting information from patients, providing personal patient care, and educating patients on pre-testing and post procedure activities.  Explains procedures, positions patients for desired results, and cushions and shields patients as appropriate.  Varies procedure or position and applies abdominal pressure to adjust to patients’ medical condition and/or procedure difficulty.  Independently explains procedures and positions patients for indicated procedures.  Answers patient’s questions during procedures.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must meet the following requirements:

a.  Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States.  (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

b.  Experience or Education.  Education may not be substituted for experience at this grade level.

c.  Licensure or Certification.  No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications.

d.  Assignment.  This represents the full performance level.  Technicians at this level function with minimal instruction, assisting the staff with complex specialized procedures such as ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS).  They are proficient with GI endoscopic equipment and ensure proper performance of endoscopic equipment; select alternate equipment or adjust equipment settings to accommodate patient needs and produce high quality technique.  The collect, process, and label all specimens; train other technicians in basic endoscopic procedures; work in and outside the GI unit offering technician support during emergent and on-call endoscopic cases; and assist the nurse in patient care duties such as obtaining vital signs, dressing and documenting all pertinent information in the patient’s records.  They inventory and maintain par levels of specialty equipment for the endoscopy unit. 

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): You will be rated on the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

1.  Knowledge of endoscopic equipment and use in basic and complex endoscopic procedures.

 

2.  Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the GI system, with ability to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures.

 

3.  Ability to assist physician with specialized, complex procedures.

 

4.  Knowledge of universal precautions and disinfection techniques and ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) to clean reusable medical equipment (RME).

 

5.  Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service skills and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care.

 

6.  Ability to use basic computer systems and programs to record patient and endoscopic data, adhering to patient privacy and information security policies.

 

7.  Ability to deliver patient care, including vital sign measurements and medication administration.
