POSITION INFORMATION:  Temporary, Not-to-Exceed 1039 hours

This recruitment will be used to fill seasonal appointments.  These appointments are not to exceed 1039 hours in a twelve month period, although positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Light to moderate physical effort is required for driving, mopping, sweeping, cleaning surfaces, and performing general maintenance work. Moderately heavy physical effort is required to move and control heavy equipment, carry and set up ladders, and work from ladders.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Weather conditions range from sub-zero temperatures with snow to high temperatures with long dry spells. Walking surfaces may be uneven and slippery. May be exposed to drafts, noise, fumes, dust, abrasives, chemicals, solvents, or other irritants. There is a chance of injury such as bruising, cuts, scrapes, falls,, strains, etc. The worker is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions. Care is required to avoid serious injuries while driving, working on ladders, and using heavy powered equipment. Driving is done is all kinds of weather over prescribed routes within the South Rim area of the park. The driver is exposed to the possibility of injury as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading the vehicle.

 

AREA INFORMATION: This position is stationed at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park located in Northwest Arizona, approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 85 miles Northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet.  Temperatures range from approximately 85 degrees in the summer to 17 degrees in the winter.  Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, banking facilities, churches, a recreation center, a clinic with resident physicians and several restaurants.  The park community consists of some 2,000 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members.  There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work.  Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff.  Recreational opportunities include hiking, river rafting, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.

This position is located in the Facility Management Division, Sanitation-Custodial Shop, at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park. The incumbent will operate light trucks to transport self and supplies to work sites. The incumbent will perform a full range of custodial duties in public buildings and in the campground.   Will also keep these areas stocked with supplies and needed tools. Will clean fire rings and pick litter.  Will work as a member of a crew and assist others as needed.

Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Handbook X-118C, must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required; however you must be able to demonstrate the rough experience shown in your written application, that you possess sufficient knowledge, skill and ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Experience, education, and/or training as it relates to your ability to operate motor vehicles. Conduct building maintenance, using equipment, cleaning products, and general custodial duties. 


 

Requirements

1.National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.

2.  Applicants must possess a valid state driver's license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A valid State driver's license is required. As a condition of employment, you will be required to submit a completed GSA Form 3607, Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. If you are tentatively selected for employment in this position, you will be required to complete GSA Form 3607 and submit the above State issued documents. Your employment, after your tentative selection, will be contingent upon receipt of these documents in a timely manner and that those documents establish, to the satisfaction of the selecting official, that you possess a valid driver's license.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Your rating will be based on both your responses to the Job Assessment Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume. The assessment questions relate to the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs)/competencies that are required to perform the work of this position. Only education and experience acquired by the closing filing deadline will be considered.

3) Ability to perform minor building maintenance and maintaining stock of supplies.

4) Ability to pick up litter and maintain grounds free of snow, ice and other debris.

5) Ability to perform the full range of custodial duties throughout the park.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Category rating procedures will be used to rate and rank candidates. Candidates will be ranked into 3 categories:
Category Group I (Best Qualified) - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position.  
Category Group II (Well Qualified) - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job.
Category Group III (Qualified) - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all of the requirements of the job.

VETERANS PREFERENCE: Veterans Preference applies to category rating. Within each quality category, veteran's preference eligibles are listed first, including CP, CPS, XP, and TP. In addition, veterans who have a 10% or more service-connected compensable disability (CP or CPS) are placed at the top of the highest quality category. Applicants referred are listed on the selection certificate alphabetically (veteran's preference eligibles before non-veterans) without scores.
