JOB SUMMARY:

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is the lead agency for the United States in carrying on a government-to-government relationship with the tribal nations. Indian Affairs (IA) maintains a substantial museum collection which reflects the history of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), and American Indian culture. The museum collection includes archeological artifacts and associated documentation from Indian and Federal lands, ethnographic objects, historic items, and artwork. The duties of the position fall primarily in museum collections management and registration work.

NOTE: Travel/Relocation expenses not authorized. Any relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty will be the responsibility of the selectee. SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Performs technical duties in connection with managing, documenting, and preserving IA’s museum property as follows:

· Conduct site assessments and museum property inventories across the country.

· Monitor the use and care of the collection to assure that environmental, security, housekeeping, and administrative standards are met.

· Identify preservation and conservation needs of museum property.

· Maintain a nationwide database of information and documentation of IA museum property.

· Provide technical assistance and advice on all aspects of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the treatment of NAGPRA cultural items (human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony) within the context of proper curation and the requirements of the Act.

· Ensure that documentation, proper public notices, and consultation occurs with federally recognized Tribes regarding the cultural affiliation and repatriation of human remains and funerary objects.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: (OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for Professional and Scientific Positions and Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for Museum Curator Series, GS-1015).

BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL GRADES:

A.Degree: museum work; or an applicable subject-matter field, from an accredited college or university.

OR

B.Combination of education and experience in courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, PLUS appropriate experience or additional education.

OR

C.Four years of related experience that provided knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional museum work comparable to that normally acquired through successful completion of the 4-year course of study as described in A above.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:In addition to meeting the basic entry level qualification requirements, applicants must have the following:

GS-13:1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.

 

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA’s) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and related to the care, preservation, and management of museum collections. Examples of qualifying specialized experience includes, but is not limited to, work involving administering, supervising, or performing professional work related to research, collections and exhibits in museums; museum curation, collections management; planning and managing the storage and preservation of museum objects.These examples are not all inclusive (refer to the summary of duties for specialized experience).


SUITABILITY, CLEARANCE & REQUIREMENTS: A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant’s successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

 

OTHER: Incumbent is required, as an incidental duty, to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle, in the performance of duties, therefore, a valid driver’s license is required. Incumbent must have a safe driving record within the three-year period immediately preceding submittal of GSA Form 3607 and be able to meet the safe driving requirements of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
