This position is located in the Air, Water and Aquatic Environment Research Program, Rocky Mountain Research Station, Flagstaff, AZ. The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of recurring and complex duties in support of ecological research on forest and/or rangeland ecosystems.

Temporary Appointment: Some positions will have varying work schedules. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time and will involve working weekends or irregular work hours. Considerable travel may be required. Some positions involve work that requires travel away from the official duty location to remote worksites within commuting distance (49 miles).

Positions will be filled as a temporary appointment up to 6 months.

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

Performs a variety of routine and frequently complex tasks involving forest plant projects and program planning activities. Collects Ponderosa Pine and other tree species specimens and samples and prepares them for laboratory analysis. Is responsible for the accumulation, coding, transcription and processing of information; edits and corrects records; and provides quality control of automatic data processing entries. Tabulates results and prepares graphs and charts according to instructions. Assists in the design of new plant projects. Performs laboratory analysis of pollutant concentrations in plant tissue, aids in preparation of specimens for histological analyses and does routine technical analyses. Layout of experimental plots by taking measurements and marking corners and boundaries. Uses botanical key to identify plants encountered during field trips or surveys of Forest areas. Compiles and summarizes the vegetation types obtained from aerial and ground surveys including forest health monitoring, biological evaluations, and pilot tests conducted as part of the project.

GS-05: One year of general experience. Specialized Experience is defined as one or more of the following: Participating in plant-related projects using established methods, techniques, and procedures, such as conducted vegetative surveys; identified and recorded locations of sensitive, threatened, endangered and proposed listed plant species; and photographed, collected, and prepared specimen mounts of plants, Participating in field work projects related to vegetation management such as field measurements of density, diversity, etc., experimental layout, seeding or planting, fertilizer or pesticide treatment, Applying simple biological procedures, such as surveyed planted tracts, employed growth deterrents, and inspected for disease or infestation by insects. –OR

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled such as botany, or related plant sciences.
