JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission.  They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations.  The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position:

This position is located in the Housing Division of the Directorate of Public Works, US Army Garrison, Fort Hood, Texas. The office is comprised of Government employees and Contract employees. The Directorate of Public Works environment is dynamic and challenging due to the major activity and mission support for the largest military post in the US Army.
Fort Hood is located in a temperate region of Texas between Austin and Waco. Temperatures vary from an average high of 92 degrees F in the summer to average highs of 65 degrees F during the winter, allowing for outdoor recreation for much of the year. The supporting communities of Killeen and Copperas Cove provide excellent housing at a reasonable cost. Urban and suburban housing is readily available. Fort Hood is a major employer in the area and has an excellent partnership with the neighboring communities. The area is also home to many churches. The area is a fast growing community with new schools, restaurants, and shopping opportunities. Local colleges (University of Mary Hardin Baylor, Central Texas College, and Tarleton University) provide higher educational pursuit. The University of Texas at Austin and Baylor University, Waco, are located within commuting distance.

  • Receive and oversee incoming shipment of items.
  • Route items for processing or holds for required inspections.
  • Examine items to verify part number, identity, and quantity.
  • Check for discrepancies such untagged parts or unreported damage.
  • Select and assemble items for shipment or issue.
  • Conduct and oversee warehouse inventories.
  • Haul supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Load distribute and comply with load rated capacity, stacking, cargo netting, booming, chaining or safety to avoid spill or damage to cargo in transit.

Screen-Out Element (Failure to meet the screen out element will result in an ineligible rating): I have experience performing the work of a Materials Handler (FLO) under normal supervision. This includes experience performing duties such as: warehouse duties and functions; and receipt, storage and distribution of supplies and equipment.

 

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies) in the following areas:

 

  • Knowledge of Work Practices
  • Knowledge of Technical Practices
  • Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, Etc.
  • Knowledge of Materials
  • Ability to Apply Dexterity and Safety Practices

 

Physical Effort:
Stands, stoops, bends, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May be required to work at a rapid pace for prolonged periods. Frequently lifts and carries material that weighs up to 70 pounds and at times may handle items weighing over 70 pounds. Heavy bars, chains, and hooks must be lifted and properly secured. Loaded vehicles are normally hard to steer and back up.


Working Conditions:
Work inside and outside subject to heat, cold, damp, drafts, or poorly lighted areas; work on open docks or storage. Work may be dirty, dusty, and greasy. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises; falls from ladders; or injury from other material handling equipment. Is exposed to occasional driving during icy weather. Exposed to various traffic hazards on public-use roads. Hearing protective devices and other protective devices and safety equipment must be worn at all times during exposure to the hazardous condition.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
