CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a temporary position that is based on a work schedule of not to exceed 1039 hours.

  

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS:  Incumbent must have the physical ability to perform tasks which require handling heavy objects (over 75 lbs) of various weights, sizes and shapes. Exposure to dust, steep narrow trails, noise, and congested areas will be frequent. Incumbent will be subject to strain related to riding stock for long periods of time. Maintenance workers will be required to hike long distances (10 miles or more) in varying terrain and extreme weather conditions while carrying heavy packs and tools. 

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS: Employees must be fit and able to hike and perform strenuous labor. Employees must maintain a drug and alcohol free work place. All policies regarding drug and alcohol will be addressed upon acceptance of position. Use of drugs or alcohol will be terms for immediate dismissal of duty. Work may require travel in a helicopter or boat to access remote locations. This position may require schedule changes, these changes can be made with little prior warning. Employee will be exposed to inclement weather conditions, varying from extreme heat in the summer (100 degrees or more) or to extreme cold during the winter season (often below 0 degrees). Will be exposed to new, unbroken stock, moving equipment, various cutting tools, and crowded, congested areas. Will be working at elevations ranging from 2000 to 8000 feet. Will be exposed to the hazards of stock animals, such as being kicked, bitten, bucked off, or stepped on.

AREA INFORMATION: This position is stationed at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park located in Northwest Arizona, approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 85 miles Northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 85 degrees in the summer to 17 degrees in the winter. Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, banking facilities, churches, a recreation center, a clinic with resident physicians and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,000 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Recreational opportunities include hiking, river rafting, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.

Permanent employees obtain housing either through a bid system or by assignment into shared furnished quarters.   Because of limited housing, when an employees is assigned shared quarters, the park is not able to provide accommodations for family member and pets.   For additional housing information contact the park Housing Office at 928-638-7796.

Incumbent is responsible for packing livestock with supplies throughout Grand Canyon National Park, caring, feeding, and providing basic veterinary care for livestock, assisting trail crew leaders by providing transport of groceries and equipment to inner-canyon bunkhouses and spike camps, cleaning, repairing and maintaining saddles and associated tack, and maintaining a high degree of safety (for livestock, visitors, workers, and self) in the performance of these duties. In addition, the incumbent will be required to perform trail construction and repair as necessary.  This includes operating all trail-related hand and power tools, making trail improvements, and implementing safety protocols. The animal caretaker is responsible for preparing, securing and packing loads of various sizes, shapes and weights using hitches appropriate to the task at hand, feeding, medical treating (including administering subcutaneous and intramuscular injections), the general are of livestock and livestock facilities, the use of heavy equipment, and transporting mules via trailer both in and out of Grand Canyon National Park. This work is performed in front-country and remote wilderness locations often employing minimum tool standards and techniques. These responsibilities include but are not limited to digging ditches, stone wall repairs, grading trail surfaces and installing water-bars and retainer-bars. To facilitate construction of these features you will be required to operate jackhammers, chainsaws, gas powered drills, picks, rock-bars, hammers, shovels, and various other hand and power tools. Some tools require certification prior to operation. You will be required to obtain and provide certification documents prior to use of these tools. If selected for this position you will be required to operate a vehicle for traveling to and from the jobsite.

Employees are required to live in bunkhouse/dormitory type facilities. While living in NPS quarters all employees are expected to maintain a clean and orderly living environment. All employees will be required to work away from duty stations in bunkhouse or backcountry (camping) environments for periods of no less than 9 days and frequently for periods of up to 30 days. In these situations employees are required to cook for other crewmembers, sleep in tents, maintain personal cleanliness and a sanitary living environment, cooperate with fellow employees and camp in adverse weather conditions.  All employees are required to hike in excess of six miles per day on steep, narrow and congested trails often carrying heavy packs and equipment.

Requirements

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Your rating will be based on your responses to the Assessment Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume. The assessment questions relate to the following competencies that are required to perform the work of this position.
 * Experience in riding livestock (mules) on steep narrow and congestive trails in remove backcountry environments, ability to pack gear, tools, material and supplies on livestock (mules), ability to saddle, fit and adjust riding saddles, pack saddles, and associated tack used in commerical packing. Experience in the use of hitches associated with livestock (mules), packing, box-hitch & Diamond Hitch.

 * Experience in the repair of leather goods, saddles and tack associated with livestock (mules) packing. Knowledge and experience in providing feed scheduling and maintaining general good health to livestock (mules). Experience in identifying injuries and/or lameness to livestock (mules).

 * Experience in general grounds keeping duties (i.e. cleaning corrals, minor repairs to barns-corrals, etc). Experience in the use of hand tools and mechanized tools, (i.e. shovel, pick, rock-bar, hammer, grip-hoist, block & tackle, etc) to include small engine tool sand truck and trailer combination vehicles used in the overland transportation of livestock.

 * Experience in working with others and interaction with visitors in stressful and physically demanding work projects. Experience in living in a bunkhouse or backcountry camp type environment and working with diverse crews.

Applicants considered best qualified must be highly proficient in all requirements of the job and be able to perform effectively in the position. 
Category Group II (Well Qualified) - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job.
Category Group III (Qualified) - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all of the requirements of the job.

VETERANS PREFERENCE: Veterans Preference applies to category rating. Within each quality category, veteran's preference eligibles are listed first, including CP, CPS, XP, and TP. In addition, veterans who have a 10% or more service-connected compensable disability (CP or CPS) are placed at the top of the highest quality category (except in the case of scientific or professional positions at the GS-9 level or above or if they fail to meet positive education requirements, training, selective placement factor, etc.).
