Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) is one of the largest integrated health care systems in the Department of Veterans Affairs and includes facilities in Temple, Waco, and Austin, TX.  Community-Based Outpatient Clinics are located in Brownwood, Cedar Park, Palestine, and Bryan-College Station.  NO STATE TAXES!!!

This is a bargaining position.

 

Tours of Duty:  7:30 am 4:00 pm with rotation to other tours as needed.

The Nursing Assistant performs duties under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.  Provides patient care which is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, spiritual, chronological, recreational, and diversional needs of the adult (ages 17-59) or geriatric (ages 60+) patient.  Has experience working with veterans with severe major depression, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, or schizophrenia.  Demonstrates knowledge of the changes associated with aging and demonstrates the ability to provide care based upon age related factors as specified on competence assessment checklist.  Performs personal care through education in addition to completing, encouraging, supervising, or assisting the patient in activities of daily living.  Gives attention to details of care.  Demonstrates the ability to interact with veterans, helping to decrease anxiety and increase coping skills.  Collects and transports specimens as needed.  Performs a wide range of treatments/procedures as directed for adult and geriatric patients who are medically, surgically, and/or psychiatrically ill.  Observes monitors, communicates, and documents care given, reports status of patients and changes noted to the registered nurse.  Recognizes emergency situations (i.e., codes, disasters, and fire and safety issues) and takes appropriate and immediate action.  Can successfully perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the Heimlich maneuver.  Completes assignments in accordance with instructions and the patient’s treatment plan.  ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY:  must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

 

  • U.S. citizenship.  
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:Qualifications are derived from the Office of Personnel Management Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions (GS-621 series), available in Human Resources Management Service (HRMS).  Must have at least one year specialized experience or a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree with courses related to the occupation.  Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position to be filled and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, such as ability to perform suctioning, sterile urethral catheterizations and sterile dressing changes.  Certification as a Nursing Assistant, preferred.

Public Law 95-201 requires that persons appointed to direct patient-care positions must possess the required basic proficiency in spoken and written English.
