The Indian Health Service (IHS), an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives.  The IHS provides a comprehensive health services delivery system for American Indians and Alaska Natives with opportunity for maximum tribal involvement in developing and managing programs to meet their health needs.
To be eligible for this position under the Delegated Examining (DE) hiring plan, you must be a U.S. Citizen.

POSITION DETAILS:  One (1) Permanent, Full-Time

This position is located at the Acoma-Canoncito-Laguna Service Unit.  The purpose of this position is to perform prophylactic and preventive dental procedures in the treatment of patients with severe dental problems such as severe caries and periodontal disease and medically compromised patients, such as those with diabetes or cardiac complications.

Basic Requirements:

Licensure: Applicants for all grade levels and specializations must be currently licensed to practice as dental hygienists in a State or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.  Must submit copy of valid, unrestricted license.

NOTE: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (l) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements:

(1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.

(2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements:

Candidates must have had 52 weeks of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level.

Specialized Experience: Such as examining patients teeth, perform therapeutic care using a variety of equipment, provide therapeutic instruction to individuals and groups, and maintain patient records accurately.  Applicant must show interpersonal skills, be able to teach others, and must be able to self evaluate work. 

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Merit promotion candidates must have completed at least 52 weeks of service in a position no more than 1 grade lower than the position to be filled.  If selected under Excepted Service Examining Plan, individuals may be appointed without regard to time-in-grade requirements.
